8 missing in small plane crash off North Carolina coast

Crews are searching the ocean off North Carolina on Monday after finding a debris field where a small plane carrying eight people went down a day earlier, the Coast Guard said.

Watchstanders received a report of a possible downed aircraft about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) east of Drum Inlet from a Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point air traffic controller Sunday, the Coast Guard said. The air traffic controller reported that the aircraft was behaving erratically on radar, then disappeared from the screen.

The single-engine Pilatus PC-12/47 crashed into the water approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) northeast of Michael J. Smith Field in Beaufort, North Carolina, about 2 p.m. local time Sunday, according to an email from the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday. A preliminary accident notification on the FAA’s website noted that the aircraft “crashed into water under unknown circumstances.”

FlightAware listed a departure for that plane from Hyde County Airport at 1:35 p.m. Sunday and noted it was last seen near Beaufort at 2:01 p.m

NC is English

SC is French. French Huguenots settled the area. Par(r)is Island was named by them, as was Port Royal.

Strangely enough, Beaufort itself was founded by an Englishman, John Barnwell, who had settled in Port Royal after the Williamites defeated the Jacobites in Irelan.

(Family History John Barnwell was my 6th Great Grandfather)

That’s awesome. My daughter suffered pneumonia with 2 weeks to go and had to hold back. There were about 1/2 dozen other girls that had been held back for one reason or another and their new platoon DI’s treated them like crap. They didn’t have all of their final paperwork, so they weren’t released to their families for several hours after their pinning ceremony the day before graduation, which reduced the amount time to spend together.

This was in 2005 so maybe that has changed now. One of my daughters’ uncles was with us and is a retired Marine. He was furious over this. He said he was a good friend of the Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps as they went through recruit training together and he was going to call him about it.

something caused their plane to divert off course

My parents lost two of their best friends when their Piper Aztec crashed into Tampa Bay shortly after taking off and heading home after their visit.

The best guess was that he, a competent pilot flying his well-maintained airplane on a clear day, had a heart attack and they nosed in.

She, being petite and not a pilot, probably was focused on him, but would not have had the strength to recover the airplane in that situation, anyway, assuming she knew how to do it.

Sad ending no matter how it happened.

“Beautiful airplane. When I get $4Mil, that I don’t need, I will get one! I can dream, can’t I.”

You certainly can and should dream. Dreams are the first step toward great accomplishments!

Conceive.
Believe.
Achieve.

It’s the most amazing thing that happens in life.

I lost a lifetime attorney friend and his wife here in North Carolina a few years ago. Crashed near Greensboro.

A fine dependable plane...
IMHO, odds are that pilot error or jihad were involved...

Thinking if I’m getting on a plane rated for 8+ folks I want one with two engines rated to fly with just one if something goes wrong. Maybe that animal doesn’t exist?

Lost a friend on a twin engine Cessna when one engine cut out on takeoff and it sent the plane into a spin.

What was the strange flight track?

Eight people are mentioned reference gross and CG....but a hunt also means lots of equipment. Guns and 12 GA 3” shotgun shells for a day weigh a lot also.

The erratic track is interesting. It makes me wonder if there was an attempt to take over the flight by one of the passengers.

It was raining most of the day on Sunday so I was inside working on the house. Low-flying military aircraft are typical in this area, no reason to rush to the window, plus on Sunday, you couldn’t see anything anyhow due to the very low ceiling. Heard an aircraft pass nearby. Thought I heard the same plane come back around again. I only took notice because I didn’t recognize the sound as military. Either get jets from Cherry Point or helicopters and Osprey coming and going from MCOLF Atlantic. Virtually no personal or commercial aircraft.

Actually, didn’t hear about the crash until early this afternoon. First thought: spacial disorientation. Did notice the one gal’s name, Fulcher, on the list. One of the historic family names in the region. Should be a tough times in the area as everybody knows everybody around these parts. Not much of a population between Otway and Cedar Island.

"Tell that to John Denver."

It wasn't CG that killed Denver, it was unfamiliarity with the non-standard installation of the fuel selector switch. That and exhausting the fuel in the selected tank.

Three things that will never do a pilot any good. All the runway that's behind you, all the air that's above you, and all the fuel that's on the ground.
