Crews are searching the ocean off North Carolina on Monday after finding a debris field where a small plane carrying eight people went down a day earlier, the Coast Guard said.

Watchstanders received a report of a possible downed aircraft about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) east of Drum Inlet from a Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point air traffic controller Sunday, the Coast Guard said. The air traffic controller reported that the aircraft was behaving erratically on radar, then disappeared from the screen.

The single-engine Pilatus PC-12/47 crashed into the water approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) northeast of Michael J. Smith Field in Beaufort, North Carolina, about 2 p.m. local time Sunday, according to an email from the Federal Aviation Administration on Monday. A preliminary accident notification on the FAA’s website noted that the aircraft “crashed into water under unknown circumstances.”

FlightAware listed a departure for that plane from Hyde County Airport at 1:35 p.m. Sunday and noted it was last seen near Beaufort at 2:01 p.m

Does that mean they were “dropping like a rock” at the end?

It is with a sad heart that at this time it is believed there are no survivors of the plane crash that occurred on February 13th near Drum Inlet NC, our hearts and prayers go out to all families involved.

A statement posted by the East Carolina Community Emergency Response Team reported the plane fell off radar round 2 p.m. “just east of Beaufort, N.C.” The four teens aboard had been at “a youth hunt in Hyde County and (were) heading back to Stacy when something caused their plane to divert,” the post said. The crash site would put the plane in the Atlantic Ocean beyond the Outer Banks, which is an area of colliding north-south currents. Drum Inlet is a passage through Cape Lookout National Seashore, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Core Sound.

The information is forever changing, but at this time, I am aware of 7 individuals being on board, 4 youth (Kole McInnis, Jake Taylor, Dailey Shepherd, Noah Styron) 2 adults (Stephanie Fulcher and Hunter) and the pilot (unknown at this time). They had a youth hunt in Hyde County and we’re heading back to Stacy when something caused their plane to divert off course over the Pamlico Sound, head East over OI and then traveled South, radar was lost at 2:01PM just East of Beaufort, NC. Recovery is unlikely, but so far there have been no survivors.

Hearing locally that there were teenages onboard who were with a group that charted the plane to take them on a hunting excursion.

I was an Air Controller at MCAS Cherry Point in 1972...so I had “Inside information”.

Wish you the best,

Reading about the aircraft at Wiki.

The cabin can accommodate up to nine passengers and has a refreshment centre, an enclosed lavatory and a rear baggage area. Also this aircraft has retractable landing gears.

A lot of airplane for a single engine.

When I went back to see my daughter graduate Marine Corps boot camp on Parris Island, my girlfriend and I spent the week driving around. Beaufort is not far from P.I. and I called it Bo-fort and she called it BeU-fort.

PLANE CRASH: ENC businessman & girlfriend on board flight

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - An Eastern Carolina businessman and his girlfriend are among those who are feared lost after a plane crash Sunday off our coast. Tom Harrison, who co-owns Mattamuskeet Ventures, tells WITN that his friend and business partner Hunter Parks and Parks’ girlfriend, Stephanie Fulcher, were returning from a duck hunting trip in Hyde County when the plane they were on crashed Sunday. “He was one of the most generous people I know and he had a duck hunting property and he had invited a large number of youth and veterans. There’s a special duck season, a 1-day duck season for youth and veterans and he had invited them all to his property to duck hunt. And they had hunted there Saturday and were still in Hyde County at lunch time yesterday and flew home yesterday when the accident happened,” Harrison told WITN.

I wouldn’t think you would be likely to go outside CG limits in just thirty minutes of flight. Eight people on board that’s probably approaching max weight. At any rate someone wasn’t “flying” the aircraft at some point.

Went there last November to visit my recruit daughter. I called it Bo-fort until I heard the locals pronounce it. Going back next month for her graduation ... finally! She shipped out in January of 2021. Got injured twice. Two weeks to go until crucible! She's a tough cookie.
