Astronomy Picture of the Day - Eta Car: 3D Model of the Most Dangerous Star Known

Explanation: What's the most dangerous star near earth? Many believe it's Eta Carinae, a binary star system about 100 times the mass of the Sun, just 10,000 light years from earth. Eta Carinae is a ticking time bomb, set to explode as a supernova in only a few million years, when it may bathe the earth in dangerous gamma rays. The star suffered a notorious outburst in the 1840s when it became the brightest star in the southern sky, only to fade to obscurity within decades. The star was not destroyed, but lies hidden behind a thick, expanding, double-lobed structure called the Homunculus which now surrounds the binary. Studies of this ejecta provide forensic clues about the explosion. Using observations from NASA satellites we can now visualize the 3D distribution of the shrapnel, all the way from the infrared, through optical and UV, to the outermost shell of million-degree material, visible only in X-rays.

“...explode as a supernova in only a few million years..”

Whew, almost had me worried.

But, it could have already exploded 9,999 years ago and we won’t know until we get toasted 10,000 years after the explosion when it reaches us at the speed of light.

when it may bathe the earth in dangerous gamma rays

Gamma rays are strongly scattered (absorbed) by Earth's atmosphere.

Gamma ray astronomy only became possible in the 1960s, when technology for detecting gamma radiation at very high altitudes became available.

Before it’s too late, Earthlings had better start looking for a new home, in some other galaxy. And, with a fence to keep out the dangerous aliens and dangerous gamma rays.

Maybe it would be a good idea to stock up on sunscreen now, just in case...otherwise might find the supplies sold out.

At 13,000,000,000 miles a year — my old Bomar Calculator just melted — the light/gamma rays could be closer than we think.

You are spoiling the panic. Just like a global warming denier. I was going to make billions off noise reduction devices because noise could set the star off.

It could have blown up 9999 years ago and won’t know it till it reaches us next year

Sounds like if you’re 50 light years from a supernova, you’re ok. Eta Carinae is 10,000 LY away. We’re good. The people on Eta Carinae 4 however, they’ll be toast.

I bet if everyone wore masks it would save us.

Or, somebody will develop a gamma-ray vaccine, and we get to stay around a bit longer.

But, in a billion years or so, the sun will start it's expansion and Earth will start getting too hot to live in, so, we still need to be looking for a new home out there, so, we better get started now with the search.

I have a feeling the Earth will look like Mars, by then.

5,878,625,000,000 miles per light year... each year is about 450 times greater than your post... but what’s a few years among friends.

Light zips through interstellar space at 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) per second and 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers) per year.

As I said, my poor old Bowmar Calculator melted putting all those numbers into it.
