when it may bathe the earth in dangerous gamma rays

Gamma rays are strongly scattered (absorbed) by Earth's atmosphere.

Gamma ray astronomy only became possible in the 1960s, when technology for detecting gamma radiation at very high altitudes became available.

Before it’s too late, Earthlings had better start looking for a new home, in some other galaxy. And, with a fence to keep out the dangerous aliens and dangerous gamma rays.

Sounds like if you’re 50 light years from a supernova, you’re ok. Eta Carinae is 10,000 LY away. We’re good. The people on Eta Carinae 4 however, they’ll be toast.
