Explanation: Which half of this sky is your favorite? On the left, the night sky is lit up by particles expelled from the Sun that later collided with Earth's upper atmosphere β creating bright auroras. On the right, the night glows with ground lights reflected by millions of tiny ice crystals falling from the sky β creating light pillars. And in the center, the astrophotographer presents your choices. The light pillars are vertical columns because the fluttering ice-crystals are mostly flat to the ground, and their colors are those of the ground lights. The auroras cover the sky and ground in the green hue of glowing oxygen, while their transparency is clear because you can see stars right through them. Distant stars dot the background, including bright stars from the iconic constellation of Orion. The featured image was captured in a single exposure two months ago near Kautokeino, Norway.

Dude, I think I’m getting off.
The colors!
Fascinating! So pretty!
Surreal.
Wow!
Just awesome.
Beautiful. But scary to realize how thin are the atmosphere and magnetic field protecting us from sleeting radioactive death.
Your comment about our thin atmosphere gave me a thought.
Does all of the extra CO2 that folks say that
we humans are emitting “expand” our atmosphere?
There are processes that replenish the atmosphere else it would eventually be bled away by the solar wind. I’m not up on exactly how this happens. One could dive into the subject if curious enough. I’ve not looked at that myself. I just know that only 5 miles up you will die. I drive 3 times that to work each day.
Wow...the person standing there looks like a sky conductor
Do you need a towel ?
If it's me, I'm moving to a location where the power lines don't interfere, and there is no need for a human in this image.
That said, nice photo.
Probably might thicken it a tiny bit.
MtnClimber; Thanks for posting! I do not have to choose! I like them both!
The photo is pointing south; you can see Orion on the right and Sirius in Canis Major at the top of one of shafts by his right hand!
Looks like a scene from The X Files.
Wow! Beautiful.
It’s a stunner! And the pelted kitty is cute, too.
