Poor sleep can triple risk for heart disease
Medical Xpress / University of South Florida / Scientific Reports. ^ | Feb. 7, 2022 | Soomi Lee et al

Posted on 02/07/2022 2:34:27 PM PST by ConservativeMind

Individual aspects of poor sleep can be detrimental to heart health. But if you combine them, the risk of heart disease can increase by as much as 141 percent.

Researchers focused on multiple aspects of sleep health, such as regularity, satisfaction, alertness during waking hours, timing of sleep, sleep efficiency and sleep duration and linked them to physician-diagnosed heart disease. They found that each additional increase in self-reported sleep health problems was associated with a 54 percent increased risk of heart disease. The estimated risk of heart disease associated with an increase in sleep health problems was much higher for those who provided sleep data by both self-report and the research device. They had a 141 percent increase—a figure that could be perceived to be more accurate.

"These findings show the importance of assessing 'co-existing sleep health problems' within an individual to capture the risk of heart disease. This is one of the first studies showing that among well-functioning adults in midlife, having more sleep health problems may increase the risk of heart disease," said Soomi Lee, assistant professor. "The higher estimated risk in those who provided both self-report and actigraphy sleep data suggests that measuring sleep health accurately and comprehensively is important to increase the prediction of heart disease."

Researchers found that while women reported having more sleep health problems, men were more likely to suffer heart disease—yet gender did not impact the overall correlation between the two factors. They also found that Black participants had more sleep health problems and a higher prevalence of heart disease than white participants, but the strong association between sleep health and heart disease did not differ by race in general.

My father and other men in my family had heart attacks.

This helps me know my efforts to get better sleep are likely to help, and I do get better sleep, now, thankfully.

I was missing sleep last week and it seemed to stress my heart. So I got as much rest as I could over the next few days that I was off.

I’m feeling better now but all prayers appreciated.

God bless.

From a strict sleep side (applicable to all):

1. Reduce lighting in early evening
2. Got a comfortable bed
3. Reduce the temperature a few degrees
4. Occasionally take time-release melatonin (3 mg for me)
5. No caffeine after 1 or 2 PM
6. Comfortable eye mask (others may desire curtains that block light)
7. Minimize sounds (may use ear plugs if something is happening outside)
8. Drink less fluids within 2-3 hours of sleeping
9. Finish eating before 6:30 PM
10.&11. Have a magnesium tablet and some Vitamin B6 with vitamins/supplements at dinner time

Now, I also have generally addressed other reasons to wake up in the middle of the night, once asleep, and that amounts to another 2-3 supplements.

Sleep apnea contributes to AFib.

And if you are overweight, odds are you do have sleep apnea.

Look into getting a cpap machine.

“Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care, The death of each day's life, sore labor's bath, Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, Chief nourisher in life's feast.”

Good sleep is necessary to keep yourself healthy.

You can, for a short time, swap out food for sleep or sleep for food but over the long term it does not work.

My wife has used a CPAP for a long time. She probably would die without it.

One of the most important things is to avoid electronic device screens for at least an hour before bed. The blue light stimulates your brain and body to go into the wake up mode, making it much harder to get to sleep.

This is a purely modern problem, of course!

I ask about obesity because I think that is the cause of most sleep apnea. I also think it’s pretty clear that obesity is not good for the heart. So is the heart trouble really caused by sleep problems or are the sleep problems just another effect of being very overweight? IDK, I’m just asking / wondering.

Thank you for starting this list.

Can you clarify what these supplements are?

I can’t count all the articles I’ve read lately that warns me of all sorts of things that may cause heart problems. Exercising, hard work, certain foods, etc.

It’s seems that someone really wants us to remember that heart attacks are very common. Especially in young men who play sports.

Here are a few things that you could consider:

Anemia is not the only health concern linked to iron deficiency

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2021-11-anemia-health-linked-iron-deficiency.html

High levels of rare gut bacteria may be linked to restless legs syndrome

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2019-06-high-rare-gut-bacteria-linked.html

It would appear an iron deficiency and gut bacteria overgrowth are possible issues causing some aspect of the flareups.

Have you previously looked into either? Iron and probiotics might both help.
