More than 100,000 Americans died from diabetes in 2021, marking the second consecutive year for that grim milestone and spurring a call for a federal mobilization similar to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The new figures come as an expert panel urges Congress to overhaul diabetes care and prevention, including recommendations to move beyond a reliance on medical interventions alone.
The nation’s toll from diabetes has increased sharply, surpassing 100,000 deaths in each of the last two years and representing a new record. Diabetes-related deaths surged 17% in 2020 and 15% in 2021 compared to the prepandemic level in 2019.
…"Type 2 diabetes itself is relatively preventable, so it's even more tragic that so many deaths are occurring."
In a new report, the National Clinical Care Commission created by Congress said that the United States must adopt a more comprehensive approach to prevent more people from developing type 2 diabetes, the most common form, and to help people who are already diagnosed avoid life-threatening complications. About 37 million Americans, or 11% of the population, have diabetes, and one in three Americans will develop the chronic disease in their lifetime if current trends persist, according to the commission.
"We aren’t going to cure the problem of diabetes in the United States with medical interventions," Herman told Reuters.
…The commission also highlighted the risks of overtreatment in older adults with type 2 diabetes. Reuters wrote about that risk in November and how a drug industry campaign for an aggressive treatment target led to an epidemic of potentially lethal incidents of low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia.

Much easier to start the intermittent fasting first, and it doesn’t even have to be strictly low carb (just low sugar).
THANKS for the link. I’ve long said that the rise in obesity and the rise in diabetes are not necessarily related, and I’ve suspected food additives, especially fructose. This hurts because we are grain farmers, 90% corn ...
Of the diabetics I know, most are not obese. But what is the sweetener in the foods they eat? I don’t know, of course.
Do the opposite of what the FDA tells you and you’ll never be diabetic. Type2 is mostly caused by processed foods.
Americans were a lot healthier and thin before they started consuming corn oil, soybean oil, and canada oil. That caused them to have more omega 6 fats in their bodies than at any other point in history.
It’s interesting to look at pics of our underprivileged youts who go to bed hungry every night and look 40% overweight....
“Pepsi”
Any chance you could get your father-in-law interested in “Diet” or “Zero Sugar” drinks as a kind of intermediate step? They’re tasty. Artificial sweeteners can be problematic though, in that they can get us craving sweets at other times. My health and weight improved years ago when I gave up sugary drinks. When at times I have given up even the diet drinks and switched to mostly only water, my weight improves even more. Seen so many people drop weight when they get what they drink correct. Not the full story but quite a start. At least see if you can get him to give up caffeine in soft drinks. Can be a couple or three unpleasant days when going off sugary soft drinks, maybe stomach upset. But worth it. I try to use Lent to get my appetites under control. I don’t care much for vegetables either but if they’re a part of something I like, like beef stew, will eat them.
Then why don’t you REALLY do a serious carb reduction in your diet?
My husband is the same way. He has stopped drinking soda, but refuses to eat non starchy veggies.
Looking at the raw numbers of cases tells you little. You need to look at the rate - number of cases per a fixed number, e.g., 100,00 or 10,000.
As the population increases of course you will get more cases. Duh. As the population increases with illegals from our southern border, of course the raw number of cases of diabetes will increase. They are very susceptible to diabetes and untreated diabetes.
Chronic blood sugar elevation is the initial issue that causes the rest of the cascade of problems with diabetes. It would seem that, since you are not overweight, insulin is not pumping your blood sugar into extra fat cells, for some reason. Regardless, you should still be able to get off the medicines, but it would take some added effort.
You can continue with the medicine, but it does sound like the spiral is not yet checked for you, and I really encourage you to give these things more of a try. At the very least, if staying with carbs, strive for the lowest Glycemic Load items you can possibly eat and see if that brings down your numbers through the day.
Unfortunately, they don’t give him they same taste and feel. I think there can be an aspect of getting energy from the carbs that makes one think this extra energy is “fixing” something.
He has little ability to check his desires when it comes to food. He has a limited list of things he enjoys, and practically none of items on that list are “healthy,” unless snack cakes changed food categories in the last few days.
As long as he can pay the medical bills and isn’t contributing to increased costs for the rest of us.
If you track them on a time scale, the rise in diabetes in the US tracks right along with the government’s adoption of the Food Pyramid recommendations on diet.
High consumption of carbohydrates is likely the culprit. And not just sugar and HFCS - bread, grains, rice, potatoes - they all contribute.
imho the next big agriculture industry will be stevia.
It used to be grown in the far east. but now its grown in the USA. demand is rising fast because its a natural substitute for sugar.
You likely are not from Kansas but Kansas weather is fairly typical of midwestern weather and they grow a lot o corn there. I just googled stevia kansas and got this in return
Stevia has recently gained attention and become available in health food stores in
the United States as a natural non-sugar sweetener. It is a tropical plant that is
native to Paraguay and Brazil, but does well in Kansas and probably in other Great
Plains states. An herb company in Missouri has recently obtained seed from a
breeding selection program in Canada to improve Stevia and select for sweeter
plants. Stevia was originally used in eastern Parguay to sweeten the local tea, Yerba
Mate, but the plant was also used medicinally. https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/mf2630.pdf
At least there is research showing that whole grains/high fiber and potatoes etc in moderation will prevent diabetes. I don’t know of any such studies concerning refined sugars.
At 79, I have been diagnosed as Type II diabetic for 12 years or more.
Recently, in late December my labs indicated a precipitous A1c drop from 6.5 to 5.1 an all time low. I was taken off metformin. I began taking my fasting blood sugar in the morning and for 10 days it was less than a hundred. In recent years it was in the range of say 135 which is less than the former 140 type II threshold.
Type II diabetes is in my experience a disease of lab numbers. The original diagnosis was made on the basis of blood sugar of 140 in two 6 month tests. There are no real symptoms.
What happened? I have no clue
Does your father-in-law demand you wear a mask?
We each a lot more processed foods, junk foods and fast foods than generations before as well. Changes to the American diet starting in the 1960s and continuing from there are wrecking our health.
Sugar is a drug to many people. During the pandemic, people will turn to what comforts them. It’s easy to become addicted when a majority of our food has added sugar.
