Weekly Garden Thread - January 29-February 4, 2022 (Grow a Medicinal Garden Edition)
January 29, 2022 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I don’t even dare try it now. I feel really horrible for a few days after eating even small amounts. The problem is that a lot of things have garlic in them too. I have to be careful buying food and especially eating out. I just recently tried some kimchi not realizing it had garlic in it. .pved it, but ugggh- the sweats and dizzy and nausea set in soon after. I love the taste of the kimchi though, and will, have tosee about making it without the garlic. Onions bother me too, but not as badly thankfully.

Those teeth look too widely-spaced for elderberries, but maybe it’s the angle of the photo.

I’m growing seedless grapes, (Somerset, light red) but they seem to be crossing with the local wild grapes, so I am getting some seeds and a lot of them turned purple anyway!

Crossing wouldn't change the fruit like that, unless you grew out the crossed seeds. Sounds like maybe a graft failed, and you're seeing fruit from the rootstock.

I’m going to try my steamer/juicer if I can get to the berries before the birds do, next Summer. :)

It’s gonna take a LOT of berries to make some juice, though!

Mom used to make elderberry jelly when I was a kid.

We beat every road ditch in the county harvesting the berry clusters. There wasn't enough calamine lotion on the planet to make all of the chigger bites I got stop itching.

There’s a plant called Toona sinensis that supposedly tastes like onions and garlic, but it’s not related to them. That might help you get the flavor without the reaction.

(I haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but I’m hoping to. I’m allergic to onions.)

Thank you. I really miss garlic bread- I’ll bet the substitute can be sprinkled on bread to give a similar taste. And also, mightmtaste good in the kimchi if I can make, some myself (I haven’t looked into making kimchi, so not sure if it’s super hard to make or not?)

Well that’s a bummer! I am wondering if it the sulfur. Both in garlic and onions.

I don’t think so because I was taking sulfur tablets awhile back and was OK with them.

Yeah, I thought of that, too, after posting. I DID buy them at Walmart, so anything goes!

Either way, the grapes are really good and made fantastic juice.

I had ‘King of the North’ at my other farm, and I didn’t bring any along. The drought year of 2012 was an amazing production year for them. My FIL (at the time) was an avid grape grower, so not only did I have a ton of my own grapes, but he kept leaving me 5-gallon buckets of grapes on the porch every few days. It was an embarrassment of riches that season. :)

This has been a great thread so far. I am learning a lot and have made some gardening plans. So many food natural remedies, especially for the immune system. Fits in so well with maintaining our health and healthy living through our own gardens.

Who's complaining? NOT ME! 40 degrees, today! Planning on digging my way to the greenhouse to see 'who' may be living in there these days, and asking them (politely!) to leave, LOL! I need to pick a spot in one of the raised beds for a temporary compost pile, as my two bins are FULL to the brim. (We eat a lot of greens and veggies all year 'round.) Snow is going SOUTH of us, but it looks like it could be a doozie. Again, I'm NOT complaining!

Nice find! We put in a bunch of lavender last year. Plus all this talk about dandelions. Can’t wait til spring so I bought a bunch at the store and had a lovely salad for lunch.
