Weekly Garden Thread - January 29-February 4, 2022 (Grow a Medicinal Garden Edition)
January 29, 2022 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/29/2022 5:54:08 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

My Dad’s dandelion salad.

fresh young greens
sliced hardboiled egg
thin sliced onion
vinegar and oil dressing (he measured by the capful so IDK)
toss and eat

I add real chopped and cooked bacon bits.

[[ My fingers are dyslexic today.]]

That is my problem most days. I’m not dyslexic, just my typing finger is (actually they say it is a neurological problem, which wouldnt surprise me... I usually type wrong letters consistently for certain words like hte nda and such. My mind sees them correctly, but my typing finger doesn’t obey lol)

Sounds good. I’d add tomato, chives if I had them, radishes, and peppers, and cheese chunks too- gotta have cheese. Apple is good too.

When we had our elderberries ages ago. I picked a couple of years, washed the heads and left the berries on. Put the heads in a shallow skillet and steamed with a tiny bit of water and covered lid. Berries came off easy and just added sugar and made some jam. I agree about the price plus I want to have my own supply.

Me too. Gonna try some different varieties this year I think, see if there arent some different flsvors. Love them with just some salt on them, we used to just eat them raw though right out of the garden before we got em to the house lol.

Mine actually is a form of dyslexia. I can usually read just fine, but when I write, type, or speak, it takes a lot of focus to get things to come out in the right order. If I’m distracted or in a hurry, letters get jumbled, similar-looking words get substituted in, the right words might come out in the wrong order, I might use the right base word but the wrong form such as “built” instead of “build”, or sometimes I just end up with extra letters where they don’t belong.

That last one is especially hard to explain if it happens while speaking.

I have a steamer/juicer that I use for cooking down grapes for juice. I love it!

If I can get to the wild Elderberries before the birds do this season, I’ll try that.

They seem to ripen in stages, so that may help. :)

That makes sense, about the dried stems.

I’m going to try my steamer/juicer if I can get to the berries before the birds do, next Summer. :)

It’s gonna take a LOT of berries to make some juice, though!

Re: Radishes

I used to grow the German Beer Radish for my Grandpa. He'd make a HUGE production out of it with the thinly sliced radishes (they ARE strong!), Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper, a glass of beer and buttered dark rye bread.

Lunch is served! Ein Prosit!
