Why Carnival and All the Other Cruise-Line Stocks Just Crashed
The Motley Fool ^ | 1/27/2022 | Rich Smith

Posted on 01/27/2022 1:31:31 PM PST by Capt. Tom

Since the beginning of our fiscal year, [and Carnival's presumably speaking of fiscal 2022 here, so pay attention if you want to know how this current year is going], we have experienced an impact on bookings for our near-term sailings, including higher cancellations resulting from an increase in pre-travel positive test results and challenges in the availability of timely pre-travel tests. In addition, in the last few weeks we have seen a dampening of the booking activity for the second half of 2022 relative to 2019.

In other words, customers are canceling trips in the first half of the year, and also "dampening" reservations for the second half.

First and second half? That sounds like Carnival is predicting a weak year all through 2022, which is obviously not what investors were hoping to hear today. While management tried to put a brave face on things, reassuring investors that "we expect to be able to successfully operate over 96% of our previously disclosed available lower berth days ... in the first quarter of 2022," being "able" to sell those reservations doesn't necessarily mean Carnival will be able to find customers to buy them.

As of this writing, neither Royal Caribbean nor Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have published warnings similar to the one Carnival Corporation just put out. That being said, it stands to reason that if vacationers are leery of cruising with Carnival, "put in place comprehensive health and safety protocols for protection against and mitigation of COVID-19 then they're probably going to be nervous about cruising with Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, as well.

If that's the case, then analyst predictions that Carnival will return to profitability in Q3 2022 and Royal Caribbean and Norwegian will turn profitable again in Q2 just got thrown into question. No wonder investors are upset.

“Cruises are just not everyone’s cup of tea”

Agreed however I find it interesting when people say negative things but have cruised very little if at all.

Personally I’ve Been on no less than 6 and have never as much as walked off a ship with a sniffle....ever.

I’ve only done Princess, stay away from the party boats and lots of folks. Choose my activities well, like the art auctions, because of the free champagne!!! And take a valium when going through Customs and boarding the ship.

January 2020 my partner and I went on our last cruise. He got sick 5 days into the cruise, with sore throat, headache, pink eye, and felt lousy. Right when covid was hitting the news waves. We stocked up on salt packets to gargle, I had eye drops, and he went to the infirmary twice. I’ve always wondered if Princess could have given us some gratuity, since Princess cruise was a known carrier.

“I was considering a cruise in 2022 but getting the jab is a big no to cruises for me.”

That’s the problem the cruise ships have.

And don’t forget, there will be couples who are vaxed and unvaxed, and they won’t go either.- Tom

1st couple cruises were carnival.....when we discovered Princess (same shipping line btw) we never even considered carnival again. You pay a little more but well worth the experience upgrade.

Have done several on Princess. Everyone of the 8-10 in our party gets sick.

Our last boarding Dec. 2019 was delayed for 3 hours due to ‘immigration’ issues. A port worker told us Princess needed extra time to decontaminate the ship. This was Long Beach.

Down all January with a terrible URI. I suspect COVID but never tested.

yeah, Covid, Smoe-vid. I would be more worried of catching Legionaries Disease if I took a cruise.

cruise upgrades make all the difference. Weeds out lots of folks who want to eat and drink free, IMO. Call me a snob. Is ok.

Steel beach vacationer chiming in. I have no inclination to go on any cruise ship. Been there, done that 40 years ago..

Actually, use get to be hermetically sealed in your room for he entire vacation as you travel by exotic and fun locations, that you are withheld from visiting. Great fun.

What’s next from this stock oracle... charter flight businesses to North Korea taking a dump?

Cruise lines were floating Petri dishes even before Covid.

I know a lot of people who cruise. My sister is a fanatic. I don't know anyone who has ever gotten ill on a cruise, or had an outbreak on their ship. It always makes news when there is a norovirus outbreak on a cruise ship, but it's not common.

We made a payment for a Carnival Cruise to Alaska in 2019, but that was cancelled. We left the money on account for a future cruise in 2021, but that was cancelled also. Finally we thought we would make it in 2022 and rescheduled for that time. But then we learned that you must have a vaccine - no exceptions (not sure if this was Carnival's requirement or due to Canada, where we would need to stop). Anyway, with that revelation we cancelled and got a refund (less $200).

We have decided to go to a certain costal town where there are a ton of things to do, and for a lot less money.

Had to happen sooner or later ...

moving the jab rules on till December and demanding the boosters were some of the last straws ...

The unjabbed are tired of waiting to cruise ...

The jabbed dont want to get boosters ...

The jabbed dont want their children to be jabbed/boostered ...

Many are waiting till its all over and they can visit all the islands again ...

When you obsess over stupid stuff, failure is inevitable.

They might as well claim to control the wind and the tides, they will have as much success at that as they are having controlling a virus.

The cruise companies should just run up a black flag and tell their customers that they are a “COVID tyranny-free zone” once they’re in international waters. Watch the ticket sales skyrocket.

It’s obvious to me that one of the goals of the Covid Scamdemic is to eliminate the cruise lines.

Green New Deal hates cruises - wasting fuel and not environmentally friendly.

I think the reason is obvious: cruisers don't like the odds of booking a balcony suite and then getting quarantined into an inside windowless cabin (or a room with a porthole if you're lucky), with no rebate for the room change.
