They need to hover about twenty feet above the ground without using any power, then go to ground to pick up the driver and then take off...

It would be hilarious to see a major city with a few million of these in the air at the same time!

In 1895, Thomas Edison was quoted in the New York World, saying “It is apparent to me that the possibilities of the aeroplane, which two or three years ago were thought to hold the solution to the [flying machine] problem, have been exhausted, and that we must turn elsewhere.”

Imagine if the FAA and OSHA had been in existence back then..........

Statistically it will be far safer Then driving from the suburbs down to Detroit on the Lodge freeway during rush hour.

But it’s still not practical for 99% of everyday uses.

Not today, but how about 100 years down the road?

FWIW, there are still people alive who grew up in the mid-west prairies whose only transportation was horse drawn buggies and the water on their properties were drilled the old fashioned way with a post stuck in the ground and a mule walking around in circles as the post dug into the ground.

Back around 2001 while on a pheasant hunting trip to N.W. Kansas, myself and my hunting buddy stayed the night in a bead and breakfast owned by a 94 year old lady who experienced the above.

Since the weekend hunting was uneventful, my only regret was hunting and not staying around and hearing the history of this old lady........

Look how far we have advanced technologically in the past 50 years. It's only going to increase exponentially in the next 100 if we are still alive............

In the USA you can keep it at your house if you wish, but you will only take off and land from an approved airfield, be that a grass strip or a paved runway. This sophisticated AirCar will not be permitted to take off, fly and land willy-nilly...

...The barnstorming days of the Wrights or even Lindburgh are ancient history...

Not in Alaska, nor in rural areas. :D

"It only takes up 6 parking spaces... "

Just think of 'em as curb feelers.

A lousy airplane and a lousy car. No thanks.

It uses the same engine for flying and driving. The driving portion will put a lot more wear on the engine since it is accelerating and decelerating a lot lot more than an aircraft engine which runs at a steady RPM.

And as a car the engine will have to be pulled and rebuilt far more frequently.

What’s the wing loading? How well does it glide without power? It’s also aerodynamically pretty dirty.

This is a toy and not a serious idea. Still I hope he has fun with it. It’s better than a muscle car at impressing the guys on the block.

Your comments seem to get to the point of this: these "flying cars" are neither "sci-fi" nor practical as everyday vehicles when in flying mode. Folding wings are nothing new, and they've just added a street-legal automobile body and tires to mostly pre-existing aircraft technology.

It's a pricey toy for someone who can master basic pilot skills, not the wave of the future for everyday transportation. It's basically a small aircraft that you can drive to and from the airport.
