Late-life exercise shows rejuvenating effects on cellular level (added back 10% of lifespan)
Medical Xpress / University of Arkansas / Aging Cell ^ | Jan 21, 2022 | Kevin A. Murach et al

For people who hate exercising, here comes some more bad news: it may also keep you younger. Not just looking younger, but actually younger, on an epigenetic level.

When the mice were studied after two months of progressive weighted wheel running, it was determined that they were the epigenetic age of mice eight weeks younger than sedentary mice of the same age—24 months. Murach noted that while the specific strain of mice and their housing conditions can impact lifespans, "historically, they start dropping off after 24 months at a significant rate." Needless to say, when your lifespan is measured in months, an extra eight weeks—roughly 10 percent of that lifespan—is a noteworthy gain.

As the body ages, there tends to be increased DNA methylation, or even hypermethylation, at promoter sites on genes in muscle.

The science behind this, while complicated, hinges largely on a biological process known as DNA methylation. A recent New York Times article discussing Murach's work on muscle memory described methylation "as a process in which clusters of atoms, called methyl groups, attach themselves to the outside of genes like minuscule barnacles, making the genes more or less likely to turn on and produce particular proteins."

DNA methylation, aging and exercise

While the paper strengthens the case for exercise, there is still much that needs to be learned. Though the connection between methylation and aging is clear, the connection between methylation and muscle function is less clear. Murach is not yet prepared to say that the reversal of methylation with exercise is causative for improved muscle health. "That's not what the study was set up to do," he explained. However, he intends to pursue future studies to determine if "changes in methylation result in altered muscle function."

Good for you! Make the most of the gift that is your life - and being healthy is the prerequisite for doing so. The longer your healthspan, the more you can enjoy life, the more good things that you can do, and the more that you can benefit others with your experience.

Hula hooping while watching TV is fun cardio. I like to dance to 60s music, too, because those dances used every muscle and they are fun. Talk a nice brisk walk. Read a book or play on the internet while on your exercise bike. Don’t like 30 minutes of cardio? Break it up into segments during the day. Play hopscotch, jump rope...the possibilities to make it enjoyable are many. Think like a kid!

Truth. I have a limit of 85 unless I am actively volunteering or working 15 hours a week. The volunteering excludes serving during church.
This live forever stuff is for Gates and Kurzweild. True narcissists.

Who decided I want to live 10% longer?

LOL, I want to know how they know I lost 10% and where it went? I do know that 84.12% of statistics are made up. Learn't that here on FR so it must be true. :)

I’m great at exercise. Usually go to gym 4xwk, had excellent muscle tone and low blood pressure. Then our governor closed the gyms for a year.

The idiot from hell is directly responsible for the deterioration of my health. BP up, strength down.

small apartment, no space My friend has those things in her apt. Looks dreadful but she has no sense of style. And she doesn’t really use them. I don’t think they’re all that good either.

Equipment in the gym is far far superior.

I saw the funniest contraption advertised on OANN (commercial), tonight...

A portable “cycler”, but...your feet/legs go clockwise/counterclockwise, side by side.

Hubby and I got a good chuckle. Who knows? It might be a very effective, next new craze gadget!

Well that would be possible had I not broken my back two years ago. There are limits to what’s possible bouncing and jumping around. And of course I can come up with reasons for not excersizing since I already partition and pace basic daily chores.

So you see it’s not as simple as finding what to enjoy in excessive....rather how much to want to trade off that’s necessary already.
