For people who hate exercising, here comes some more bad news: it may also keep you younger. Not just looking younger, but actually younger, on an epigenetic level.
When the mice were studied after two months of progressive weighted wheel running, it was determined that they were the epigenetic age of mice eight weeks younger than sedentary mice of the same age—24 months. Murach noted that while the specific strain of mice and their housing conditions can impact lifespans, "historically, they start dropping off after 24 months at a significant rate." Needless to say, when your lifespan is measured in months, an extra eight weeks—roughly 10 percent of that lifespan—is a noteworthy gain.
As the body ages, there tends to be increased DNA methylation, or even hypermethylation, at promoter sites on genes in muscle.
The science behind this, while complicated, hinges largely on a biological process known as DNA methylation. A recent New York Times article discussing Murach's work on muscle memory described methylation "as a process in which clusters of atoms, called methyl groups, attach themselves to the outside of genes like minuscule barnacles, making the genes more or less likely to turn on and produce particular proteins."
DNA methylation, aging and exercise
While the paper strengthens the case for exercise, there is still much that needs to be learned. Though the connection between methylation and aging is clear, the connection between methylation and muscle function is less clear. Murach is not yet prepared to say that the reversal of methylation with exercise is causative for improved muscle health. "That's not what the study was set up to do," he explained. However, he intends to pursue future studies to determine if "changes in methylation result in altered muscle function."

It only takes about 5 years to give somebody, starting at 65, to return them to having the performace they did at 25 years of age if that 25 year old didn’t exercise.

Truly, I felt just as many aches and pains at age 10 as I do now. I just worried about them less. So what if exercise makes me sore? It always did! I can move when I need to move. (And when you’re older it’s a lot easier to fall asleep when you need to!)
Why ask the question?
Just do it, as far as you are able. It will have benefits for the heart, lungs and muscles, as opposed to sitting around like a bump on a log.
Eat tasty real food, get your body in motion every day, get outside into the sunshine, take a multivitamin to fill in the gaps and do something that makes you feel like you did something meaningful at least once a week.
Who decided I want to live 10% longer? I should be able to make that choice. I have chores to do that requires me to work. I have no choice if i want things done. I feel like sleeping in and watching Foghorn Leghorn and Woody Woodpecker cartoons rather than live in this upside down Bidensphere.

Longevity. This isn’t the world/age I would have picked to live longer. I was born 250 years too late. I would’ve liked to explore the Wild West while it was still the Wild West. I want my time machine and I want it now before i agree to this adding 10% more to my lifespan.

Too each his own. You are overlooking the fact that this can help tremendously while you are waiting to check out. Having a good exercise program helped me not get killed by my cancer and kidney failure. Having a healthy body can sure help when the unexpected hammer hits you.

I think we’re expected to do the best that we can with that.
I agree it is better to be as functional as possible for as long as possible.
I’m not a public healthcare advocate, but I would not be opposed to a state government creating a credentialed program for anybody with a computer who wants to learn how to care for themselves, so they aren’t a cost to society.
Make use of the college and universities to create a program that anybody can take that could be worth 3 college credits if you complete the program. It would teach the basics of self care and minor first aid, because not everybody has come from families where they learned all that.
Make it just principled base, so there is no collusion with industry and it can be taken freely and on somebody’s time.
The upfront costs would be pretty minimal, but the downstream savings would be immense where healthcare is concerned.
