For people who hate exercising, here comes some more bad news: it may also keep you younger. Not just looking younger, but actually younger, on an epigenetic level.
When the mice were studied after two months of progressive weighted wheel running, it was determined that they were the epigenetic age of mice eight weeks younger than sedentary mice of the same age—24 months. Murach noted that while the specific strain of mice and their housing conditions can impact lifespans, "historically, they start dropping off after 24 months at a significant rate." Needless to say, when your lifespan is measured in months, an extra eight weeks—roughly 10 percent of that lifespan—is a noteworthy gain.
As the body ages, there tends to be increased DNA methylation, or even hypermethylation, at promoter sites on genes in muscle.
The science behind this, while complicated, hinges largely on a biological process known as DNA methylation. A recent New York Times article discussing Murach's work on muscle memory described methylation "as a process in which clusters of atoms, called methyl groups, attach themselves to the outside of genes like minuscule barnacles, making the genes more or less likely to turn on and produce particular proteins."
DNA methylation, aging and exercise
While the paper strengthens the case for exercise, there is still much that needs to be learned. Though the connection between methylation and aging is clear, the connection between methylation and muscle function is less clear. Murach is not yet prepared to say that the reversal of methylation with exercise is causative for improved muscle health. "That's not what the study was set up to do," he explained. However, he intends to pursue future studies to determine if "changes in methylation result in altered muscle function."

II believe it’s never too late. Just do it.
I’m 85, in perfect health. My doc felt muscle in my upper arm and said, “You’re very strong, you’ll live to be 100.” That was 10 years ago, and I still have zero health problems except I need a new corneal transplant because of problems caused by stupid doctors.
So, as I said, just do it. Go to the gym, lift weights. Or buy some weights and lift them at home. Gradually increase the weight. I can lift twice as much as I could 10 years ago. And now that the gym is open again, I’m going to increase it to 3x as much. Gradually. Every other day couldn’t hurt.
And, considering the way things have trended the last 20 or so years, I want to backload more years on the END of my life???
I’ve lived a good life, I’ve gotten right with God. I miss so many loved ones and friends that have gotten their Reward.
Forget it. May The Good Lord Rescue me as soon as I deserve it.
What happens if you are say 60 and your new wife is 35.
Will you die sooner or later?

I am a 66 year old female fitness trainer. These days I mostly train older women because I know the benefits of exercise. While it’s nice to live longer, the goal is actually to be functional, stronger and have flexibility as you age. Believe me, it’s a pain in the neck to exercise, but it’s worth it if you’d like to stay indepent and feel better in later years.
I agree older females need to exercise but my gosh how I hate it. There’s got to be another solution besides stretching bending and all that crazy stuff. I never feel so unproductive as when I excercise. It’s going no where just stationary stuff.
I had to go to physical therapy for an injured back....hated that too but necessary. However once that was over that was the it of it.
I don’t know what the solution is but even having the balls, the rubber stretch things, the workout mat etc. brought me no closer to doing it than just not doing it.
Maybe a stationary bike as at least I can view tv while I’m doing it.

People who don't exercise obviously have no idea how wonderful it is and how significant its impact is on how you feel and how you deal with life.
I think it is insane not to exercise...particularly when you get older.
You will immediately feel better (feel better, sleep better, look better, more energy, better attitude, etc., etc., etc.)
When you are fit, you feel significantly better, have greater mobility, and deal better with illnesses if or when they come.
Still breaking the max pushups for a 20 year old taking the Army PT test. It’s 82, but I do 103-115 in 2 minutes depending on how I feel.
I also max the pullups (21) for a 20 year old Marine twice a week.
I can’t max the run for 20 year olds, but can for my age group.
God created old age and its ailments to help us look forward to heaven and prepare for it.
I’ve had a few supervisors that were running fanatics. One that ran at lunch and was completely worthless on the job after lunch. One that ran so much his toes were black and his nail kept falling off. He never walked natural, always dragging his feet across the ground. Just because you feel great because you are drugged up on natural painkillers does not mean you are doing great.

I agree with your comment. You could say the same for cancer, too. It rarely causes immediate death (like a devastating car wreck or heart attack) and gives you time to look forward to heaven — and even get yourself ready. I know I’m a cancer patient.
God also gave us the free will to put off the inevitable for as long as we can and to be as healthy as we can while we are waiting.

Good idea — as long as it is not mandatory. It could sure cure a lot of ills. As a former dialysis patient, I can tell you from experience that a majority of the kidney patients I got to see were obese. Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure. Other diseases are negatively impacted by the same issue many of which are caused by very poor diet and couch potatoitis.
