What a drag: Older pot smokers trigger surge in demand for mental-health services

A psychiatrist who has analyzed National Health Service data in the United Kingdom is warning that older users of marijuana are triggering a huge surge in demand for mental health services.

The Christian Institute explained Dr. Tony Rao confirmed an "astonishing" 777% increase in people over the age of 55 accessing those mental health services "due to addition to the Class B drug…"

Rao cited statistics from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities which confirmed the number of over-55s at treatment for cannabis addiction was 374 in 2005-06. The most recent statistics, from 2020-21, revealed 3,279 cases.

He explained, "It is still regarded as a recreational drug with little awareness of the harm associated with its use. … There is a cohort of people over the age of 55 who grew up in quite a permissive culture with a lack of harm awareness of substances."

Now, those users were moving into the mental health service programs with problems including depressing and anxiety from their cannabis addictions.

The support group Marijuana Anonymous said in a report in the U.K. Times that it had seen a surge in those "older" users at its meetings. Their "prolonged use," the report said, "has created more mental health issues and I think we can correlate that with the influx of older people seeking help..."

The pot billboards in Phoenix don’t have a hint of a warning of any kind. You can get pizzas, gummies, burgers, drinks, all laced with recreational pot. A lot of the advertising is aimed at younger folk.

The 55 and overs having trouble now may be the ones that were smoking the good stuff back then.

I don’t smoke anything but there is a cannabis derivative called RSO, Rick Simpson Oil. It’s derived from Cannabis indica and is specifically formulated for pain management. One swallows a few drops and for about six hours the pain becomes manageable and there’s very little high.

No opiate addiction problem, no constipation and, in about 19 states no Rx needed.

So you’re not saying it should be OK to toke for a few decades, then take the triple clot shots, then be in top shape? Can they use their 5G brain tumor growing phones to call for help? Maybe they can check w/Foochi for a treatment regimen?

I of course have no actual knowledge of MJ smoking. I was told that a smoker will want to return to smoking. Called habituation. The constant smoking causes the smoker to gradually be more lazy with less motivation to get work done. Perhaps lots of ideas on how to get projects done, yet no actual progress to accomplish the task. In other words, Stoners are worthless.

Addicts refuse to acknowledge the obvious. Including the moronic addicts (libertarian trash) that have recently infested FR.

One factor that is usually ignored is that the THC content in marijuana today is stronger by a whole order of magnitude, 10-20X, than it was 30-40 years ago. This isn’t the Acapulco gold these twits grew up on.

Something of a myth. Mexican bulk weed wasn’t Acapulco Gold, by any stretch. Hash and hash oil were available, back in the day. California sinsemilla was pretty potent, but most people got stuck smoking the leaf, which was considerably less potent. Real Maui Wowie was a rare commodity, and probably a lot better than the current trademarked Maui Wowie grown in a warehouse in wherever anyone wants to grow it.

Any mood altering chemical will do a number on your mental and physical health IF TAKEN TO EXCESS.

And people have been taking a lot of things to excess in the past couple of years.

I have a younger brother who smoked pot all of his life. He is a deep leftist wacko who spews constant profanity and diatribe toward conservatives and Christians. He is sure the unvaccinated are killing him. It is impossible to have a meaningful conversation with him. He has been in the booby-hatch for anxiety and depression. Yet, he is absolutely sure pot has has no negative affect on him. He is 67, a mess of a human.

Long term pot smoking results in mental illness. Who’d a thunk it?
