Eerie echoes of World War One in Biden’s seeming rush to war
American Thinker ^ | 24 Jan, 2022 | Andrea Widburg

Those who are too addled to remember or understand the past may doom us all to repeat it.

For those who pay attention to history, it’s completely unnerving watching Joe Biden seemingly plan to drag America into a war in and over Ukraine. The great powers’ focus on this little country is eerily reminiscent of the start of WWI, a war that laid the groundwork for everything wrong with the last 108 years of Western history.

Ukraine, a small, corrupt country on Russia’s southeastern edges, was once part of the former Soviet Union. For reasons that make absolutely no sense, the U.S. is determined to see Ukraine join NATO, although NATO is less thrilled about that given Ukraine’s corruption and the fact that it does nothing to help defend Europe against Russia (which, after all, was the point of NATO).

Meanwhile, Putin is absolutely horrified at the thought of Ukraine joining NATO because that means he has a putatively hostile country sitting immediately on his border—and, worse, potentially affecting his access to the all-important warm water port that is the Black Sea (which leads to the Bosporus and from there, eventually, to the Mediterranean). That’s why Putin is making such a big show of massing troops on Ukraine’s border.

It's unlikely that this would have happened on Trump’s watch, for he never would have let matters get to this point. True to his credo, he would have figured out a deal that would have allowed all parties to maintain face and defuse the situation on the border.

I can imagine Jimmy, Bill, and Joe all dying within about a 6 month period. They are all doddering.

It doesn’t take much to see something like that.
State funeral, in the rotunda, government shut down.
flags at half staff, media heart broken,Hillary and Nanzi
in tears/hysterical, democracy under assault, etc. the possibilities are endless.

That “little country” is as big as France or Sweden, and crucial to Russia. The breadbasket, and practically the front door.

Stupid people always warn of WW3 every time a conflict breaks out in the middle east forgetting that WW1 and WW2 were mainly European wars so...

What might be called proto world wars all started in Europe going back at least to Alexander the Great's incursions throughout the world then known to Europeans.

The comparison is even more valid with you consider the corrupt and interbred monarchies on each side of the First War with the corrupt and interbred “aristocracies” leading the countries, now.

And our kids will pay the price, while the interbred get rich off of their blood.

How about its more reminiscent of WW2, where a country creates an artificial crisis, claiming to protect its ethnic people as an excuse to invade a neighboring country.

Actually, Ukraine is second largest country in Europe, second to only Russia! Every European country. including Great Britain, Germany and France, is smaller!
It also has a lot of people. And, it is again becoming one of the largest food producing country in the world.
There is some corruption there, but even that seems to be cleaning up.
The article is total bogus!
If you describe Ukraine as small country under Russian domain, the the USA is a Midsize Country in decline, with economy strongly controlled by the Chinese.

And I totally agree with the writer of this article, there is zero reason for the USA or for that matter NATO to get involved in this affair.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait, I didn't see any reason for the USA to get involved in a Muslim country v Muslim country conflict. Still don't. Bush 41's popularity went through the roof during the war, but he still lost to B.J. Clinton in '92.

WWI was the greatest manmade disaster in history.

Nah, I’d say it is far more reminiscent of the start of WWI.

Remember, Austria-Hungary claimed hegemony over Serbia, and a Serb killed the archduke and his wife, but in Bosnia (Sarajevo), which was part of the Austria-Hungary empire. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia an impossible ultimatum: Allow Austria-Hungary to move into Serbia to “root out” the Serb nationalist “extremists” who were behind the assassination, or face war. Serbia, understandably, declined such an “offer.” France was an ally of Serbia, and Russia was an ally of France, so....

“....
Serbia’s response effectively accepted all terms of the ultimatum but one: it would not accept Austria-Hungary’s participation in any internal inquiry, stating that this would be a violation of the Constitution and of the law of criminal procedure. This response did much to appeal Pasic and his country to international observers of the conflict; to Vienna, however, it made little difference. ....”

Putin needs a carrot but it must be given with a stick.

The carrot would be that Ukraine will not be invited to join Nato. The stick has to be that Nato will implement a no-invite rule regaring Ukraine when so-called “separatist” forces aided by Russia are completely out of Ukraine and full control of the area is resumed by the government of Ukraine.

The “deal” is that Ukraine would not be joining Nato but Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence will be guaranteed.

That would be a “Trumpian” deal.

I don’t know what was dumber, how WWI started, or the fact that the US decided to get involved in that stupidity.

Lol, sure like the Budhapest Memorandum that included security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine. NATO membership is the only real guarantee of independence for any neighbor of Putin.

The agreement I mentioned is preferable to WWIII and Nato and western Europe would then have the opportunity to plan on defenses that would counter Putin breaking that deal.

Well, According to the Budapest memorandum, US, UK and Russia guaranteed the territorial integrity of Ukraine!
Ukraine inherited huge nuclear arsenal from the former Soviet Union! In order to get them to give it away, we are (still) guaranteeing their territorial integrity.
I the pure legal terms, we must came to their defense?!
The comments above looks like Neville Chamberlain would approved!

War is going backfire bigly on dear leader. The American people have had it with these endless wars over dirt bag countries. Who the hell gives a damn about the totally corrupt Ukraine anyway? The only country in Eastern Europe worth going to war over is Poland.

But dear leader (who was NOT elected) needs something to distract us so war is a very real possibility.
