Tesla Model 3 Delivered With Missing Brake Pad: What Happened? ... Technicians at a Tesla Service Center told the owner the sound was “normal for performance brakes.”

VIDEO AT LINK..............

Brand-new Tesla Model 3 owner April G (April Gilmore) picked up her 2022 Model 3 Performance in Tampa, Florida, in December. It was making a weird and annoying scraping sound, so she reached out to Tesla for help. As it turns out, the electric car was missing a brake pad.

When April contacted Tesla, she let them know that the Model 3 was making a scraping sound that seemed to be coming from the driver's side rear wheel. Unfortunately, the Tesla Service Center didn't have any inspection appointments available until about three weeks later. However, the following day, Tesla reached out to April and asked her to send a video so the team could listen to the sound.

April complied and recorded a video, which she sent to the service center. To her surprise, the Tesla service rep told her many people watched the video and determined that the sound was normal and that there was potentially no issue with the Model 3's brakes. Of course, April pressed the service center to move her appointment forward. Tesla told her to have the car towed if she still had concerns.

Gilmore followed through, having the Model 3 towed to a local "independent Tesla shop." Not surprisingly, upon removing the wheel, the mechanic learned that a brake pad was missing. Not only did the Tesla need a brake pad, but also the rotor and caliper had to be replaced. Gilmore's Tesla Service Center watched a video from the independent shop and asked her to bring the car in right away.

Tesla gave April Uber credits since it didn't have loaners available. The repair has been delayed a number of times thanks to parts that aren't readily available. The original repair date was scheduled for December 31, 2021, though it was pushed to January 7, 2022, then January 14, and finally January 19.

We'll be keeping our eyes on the story to find out how it all turns out. In the meantime, Tesla covered a full month of Gilmore's car payment. Regardless of how Tesla is trying to help, the whole situation is unacceptable. We honestly don't understand how anyone watching the video could think the brakes were "normal."

No, Tesla has moved from California to Texas. In Texas where it has it’s headquarters Tesla has built a mammoth new production facility that revolutionizes auto manufacturing. Tesla will prevail because the cars from Texas will deominate the market.

Tesla has superior innovative and disruptive technology that is going to prevail.

You confuse Tesla with the UAW owned GM. GM sucks the taxpayer tit and is failing.

I am not an electric car promoter and have no inclination to buy one. I make observations and report my findings. Any Tesla securities are owned via a mutual fund

Yes, you are correct. Stellantis is still a European Fiat derivative forced to allow struggling companies to survive.

The original point is still true

Of note, is an equally large Tesla plant in Germany that is causing grief not yet out in the open in the USA. Ditto China

Scroll down and read the FAQ on honing;

All true, but it doesn't say that properly honing the cylinder makes the rings spin around the piston.

However, I wonder how those "gapless" rings manage to form a good compression or oil seal. To work properly, a regular piston ring has to constantly exert a certain amount of tension against the cylinder wall. They are built slightly larger than the cylinder bore, and are "compressed" into the cylinder leaving a gap - so you can measure how much tension is left to hold it tight against the cylinder wall after it wears. If it is a solid ring, it will begin to leak and pass oil/gasses once it breaks in the cylinder wall and has even the slightest amount of clearance.

Both of those are practically impossible.

Not even with a big hammer?

"Crosshatch angles can also vary depending on the application. These angles determine the critical ring rotation speed, generally a 45 degree crosshatch angle will do a very good job."

You are not paying attention. Tesla already dominated the EV market even before real production comes on line.

That real production from the Texas plant is a disruptive killer

Even Teslas, and I love Elon, are primitive. They have a long way to go to even be on par with ICE cars. Yeah, they are pretty, and expensive, and are a virtue signaling device for people with money, but are not practical for a cross state trip...............................

Gapless rings have an overlap, or are a double ring setup. They aren't "solid".

Once again you miss the point

The cars will be used by people in urban markets and short distances. The coming models will not be expensive.

Golf carts and forklifts are ubiquitous but not used to drive to California

Tesla’s are cool toys, no doubt about it... and most of their owners admit outright they own it for the cool tech, not because they think it’s saving the planet.

Tesla owners are as a whole, not nearly as smug as the original few years of Prius’ production owners... most of those folks were insufferable at the time.

Steve Jobs said the same thing about Segways when he and others were first privately shown the devices. “They will revolutionize transportation!”. Didn’t happen.

Unless some huge battery breakthrough comes out in the next couple of years, we are doomed to be trapped in our urban markets..........................

I see Teslas every day here in NW Florida, where we have a lot of wealthy people. Lots of both.

I’m also beginning to see a lot of Teslas on the Used Car lots. One place, the VW Dealership, had four.

When the batteries start downhill, they trade them in for a ICE engine VW auto..............

Most of what you said is wrong.

“The cross hatch hone pattern originally installed in the cylinder walls wears away during engine break-in when the rings seat. It does not exist to make the rings “spin” around the piston.”

Nope, Cross hatch is visible even after 100k miles in modern engines. The cross hatch is what holds the oil in the cylinder walls.

“It does not exist to make the rings “spin” around the piston.”

Also answered in post 68. Piston ring rotation has actually been measured.
“It is clear that whatever position the rings are in during the engine build will not be maintained during service.”
https://www.highpowermedia.com/Archive/rotation-of-piston-rings

“That is only one reason.”

That is THE ONLY reason;
“The locating pin’s job is to keep the end of the ring from moving so that it does not end up in an opening or a port hole,” explains Dave Sulecki, Global Powersports Product Manager for Wiseco. “If it did that, then it would cause engine failure. Anybody who has seen a blown-up two-stroke engine knows what I’m talking about.”

“Unlike 4-strokes, 2-stroke cylinders have ports in the cylinder wall. If the ring end gap were to pass over one of these, it would allow for expansion, collision with the edges, and failure-causing damage.”

“Measuring ring gap, especially in a bored out cylinder, is one of the key skills to know in rebuilding a motor. Gapless rings are relatively new.”

I used Total Seal gapless rings in a 350 around 1982. Here’s a trick with gapped rings some don’t know, the second ring gap should be the same or more than the top ring. I’ve been doing that for over ten years.

“Rings will move around on the piston due to a number of factors, but that is NOT the primary purpose of the honing.”

I didn’t say it was primary;

“Piston rings rotate, that is part of the reason for the crosshatch hone pattern.” (post 18.)

Here’s what Total Seal says; “Crosshatch angles can also vary depending on the application. These angles determine the critical ring rotation speed, generally a 45 degree crosshatch angle will do a very good job.”(post 40)

Here’s what Wisco says; “The cross-hatch in the cylinder walls induces rotation of the rings.” http://blog.wiseco.com/ring-grooves

Nope.

And I drove one.

Please note the differences between the Pinto and the Pinto Wagon.
