This [sugar] is the ‘worst food ingredient for your immune system’—especially during Covid, says immunologist

A question that puzzled people at the beginning of the pandemic was: Why does diabetes make it harder to fight a respiratory virus?

SARS-CoV-2 virus can make blood sugar control worse in the short term and can potentially throw people with diabetes into a very dangerous blood sugar state, studies show. It does this by binding itself to the receptors found on the beta cells of the pancreas, which produce insulin.

[H]aving diabetes means you’re in a chronic low-grade inflammatory state, which taxes the body’s innate immune system and makes it slower to jump on pathogens when they enter the body.

When you have high blood sugar — which is caused by many factors, but the biggest is consuming too much of it in your diet — it starts a vicious cycle of insulin resistance and obesity that drives up inflammatory cytokines, damages blood vessels, and activates the immune system to repair those areas.

This creates a major distraction for the immune system and paves the way for dangerous bacteria and viruses to slip through our body’s defenses.

People with diabetes can’t process sugar. That suggests that not having sugar is bad for a person who can process it.

There are many different sugars...

sucrose, fructose, lactose, maltose, galactose...

Some worse, some better...

My own personal take is that obesity itself leads to diabetes regardless of sugar consumption.

The two siblings I have with diagnosed diabetes are both obese and both more excess carb eaters and excess portion eaters - and always have been - more than excess sugar consumers.

I have neither diabetes nor obesity and have not been shy of consuming sweets. I even had a many long years (before not now) of daily large sweet carbonated beverage consumption. But during that time had neither obesity nor diabetes.

Yes, my analysis is merely anecdotal.

Are they likely to have a lot of stored iron? Having a lot of iron or omega 6 fats in one’s body makes it harder to process sugar.

Men who consume chocolate or meat consume more iron than they need. If they don’t remove blood or donate blood every two years, I think they likely have excess iron.

My favorite senior doesn’t have diabetes but her motto is “Whatever you got, sugar will make it worse.”
I’m not a fanatic about it but she says someday I could be. :(
No need to read an entire book, just search “sugar” at youtube and you’ll get an earful!
Our bodies weren’t designed to thrive on the modern diet that’s loaded with sugar and carbs.

Just eat what is presented to you by the marketing people at the major food producers. Choose it by the pretty and convenient packaging at the supermarket. You’ll be fine.

Don’t bother to read the ingredients. You won’t know what most of that stuff is anyway. It’s just in there to make it taste better and stay fresh. It won’t hurt you, or your kids. < /s >

If you do read the boring ingredient lists you will notice that almost everything that comes in a package has some form of added sugar, often high fructose corn syrup.

Ever wonder Why?

“But even if you don’t eat donuts, candy, cakes or cookies regularly, having too many simple carbs like bread, pasta, rice, cereal or even certain fruits and juices may be silently driving up your blood sugar.

People often forget — or don’t realize — that sugar is in ketchup, salad dressings and lattes, as well as in juice, yogurt, cereal and protein bars.

I’m all about preventative care, especially when it comes to an insidious disease like diabetes”

Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

- - - - - - -

I believe doing that makes a person less likely to develop diabetes because it reduces the person’s hunger and makes it less likely that they will consume a lot of omega 6 fats (soybean oil, canada oil).

Huh. When I had the ChinaVirus, I ate more sugar than usual - drinking a bunch of hot tea, loaded with sugar and/or honey.

I was fine, sore/tired for two days and that was about it.
