The U.S. reported nearly half a million new COVID infections in a single day, marking the largest daily total of any country during the pandemic. More than 486,000 new cases were reported in a 24-hour period, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.
Fifteen states reported a record-high number of average daily infections: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and Washington. Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., are also averaging more daily cases than ever.
With COVID-19 cases rising so fast, fueled by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, it's estimated that more than three Americans are testing positive every second...

Given that most of these cases are still Delta, at the standard mortality rate of 1.8%, about 10,000 of today's positives total will be dead in 28 days thereabouts. A few will linger in hospital for months. 20-25% or around 100,000 of today's total, risk developing long-covid, which will drain medical resources for months to come. And then it will be tomorrow.
From NewObserver:
“If you map that out, those five days account for somewhere between 85% to 90% of all transmission that occurs,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said on CNN’s “New Day.” “So we really wanted to make sure that during those first five days you were spent in isolation.” Walensky went on to say that the CDC also took into consideration what length of time people would “tolerate.” “Some science has demonstrated less than a third of people are isolating when they need to,” Walensky said.
FEAR PORN!
BRING ON THE HERD!
And millions (including me) are just getting sick and recovering without taking an “official” (non home) test and reporting to the state.
I actually think most people can and do quarantine “enough.” The CDC says 2 days prior to symptoms and 3 days after is when people are most infectious.
I just had covid and I had no desire to go out of the house anyway for 3 days after symptoms started.
The problem, I think, is the 2 days prior when I was infectious but had no symptoms.
“Given that most of these cases are still Delta, “
SAYS WHO?
Nonsense, its omicron. The nothingburger variant.
“Once upon a time” .. that’s how fairy tales are supposed to begin.
Let’s go Brandon.
“More than 486,000 new cases”
This use of the word “case” is so utterly fraudulent!
you only need to be afraid if you’re unvaccinated or immunocompromised and/or the sole caretaker of another.
Every unvaccinated in a herd drops the herd immunity exponentially.
The sentiment I’m reading in editorials is, the ‘herd’ that is trying to protect the elderly and children, are fast losing interest in catering to or protecting the few able bodied folks who refuse to protect themselves, refuse to test, refuse to self-quarantine, impede herd immunity, and who contribute nothing to the herd’s safety. Especially if they happen to be the least vaccinated group, ie Republicans. Whose team are the antivaxers on, anyway, that they are gleefully handing power to the Dems on a silver platter of dead Republican bodies?

Nonsense.
several articles up today of testing centers with mile-long lines and 3-4 hour waits.
5 hours in Houston:

I don’t think people are waiting that long for a test because it’s just something to do on a Thursday. With a shortage of home testing kits (that have a number to call to self-report) most testing is relying on drive-in centers again. The good news is, we actually can test 1/2 a million in a day
Can’t convince the knee pads of anything. They cling to their fear.
Pal Joey strikes again.
I don’t worry about the unvaxxed. They pose no “threat.” We will all get Covid soon, whether unvaxxed or not.
How are conservatives who opposed vax mandates, regard the general "mask hysteria" as excessive (who, e.g., see no benefit to wearing masks outside), are in excellent physical condition and therefore have little personal fear re. Covid, or who view their naturally-acquired immunity (because they already had Covid) impeding herd immunity?
Last year, I laughed at the draconian measures, contracted Covid, and am now immune (i.e., am enjoying a higher level of immunity than any man-made vax could provide). How can you claim that I am impeding herd immunity?
On the contrary, by contracting Covid, I contributed to herd immunity.
Regards,
How many Flu test kits were manufactured prior to the Covid 19 so called pandemic?
These guys belong on Comedy Central, or they could bring back the "Ha" channel just for Covid news.
Who is this “we” that you are part of? Why try to blow smoke up everyone’s bums? Stop feeding us your propaganda garbage.
there’s a Freeper article from a few days ago you can search for, I might have posted it, but just grabbing any quick reference, and excuse yahoo, but it says the same as the other article, it’s down to 23%, so yeah, the majority are still Delta, your local city mileage may vary. This is up from a 3% estimate on Dec 14*, when the reported total Omi cases in the US was 43 (first Calif case Dec 1).
“On Dec. 18, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 73 percent of new cases were linked to omicron. This week, however, the agency revised those figures, slashing the earlier estimate to 23 percent — a drop of nearly 50 percentage points.”

“we” as used collectively, for instance, to denote the USA, ‘we’ can beat the Brits’ or the capability of the USA testing sites collectively, ‘we can test 1/2 million’ as in this case.
Math is Math. Pure and Simple. Nothing propaganda about it.
