Question: Would I be a bad Freeper for visiting the Jimmy Carter National Park (Plains, GA)?

Posted on 12/30/2021 7:13:54 PM PST by millenial4freedom

I will be visiting my close friend, who lives in Central GA,
at the end of January or early February.

We're considering a trip down to Plains, GA from where he is (roughly 1 hour away).
I wasn't alive during Carter's presidency, but my understanding is that he
wrecked the economy, fueled hyperinflation, helped expedite the decline of American Public Education via the creation of the unconstitutional DOE,
and was a massive anti-Semite.

In other words, he was a raving leftist who did more harm than good to this nation.
However, I will give Carter some credit. I admire his ascension to the presidency in lieu of his humble beginnings.
I'll always respect the work ethic of a peanut farmer over the work ethic of a diversity consultant or a 'legislative aide' to another entrenched swamp-deller.
He also seems to hold his Christian faith dearly.

Nonetheless, I feel a bit guilty travelling to Plains and visiting sites that pay tribute to someone who did irrevocable damage to America.
I will admit that I'm intrigued by the peanut 'culture' of the community and would like to learn more about the history of Plains. Plus, the Carter/Peanut statue looks really funny and would make a good photo-op.

Would you feel funny going or do you think I'm being too snowflakey here?

Go. It’s historical. Good Christian?

July 09, 2018 - 08:11 AM EDT
Former U.S. President Carter said on Sunday he believes “Jesus would approve of gay marriage.”

“I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,” Carter, who describes himself as a born-again Christian, told HuffPost Live.

Do what you like.

Enjoy.

If you come back singing the grinning monster's praises I will stomp all over you.

But I am still on crutches so I can not stomp very hard.

So you will probably survive.

It’s a national park. Enjoy it.

Yes, Carter was among our worst presidents.
Yes, he was a genuinely well-meaning man who rose to the top from poor & humble beginnings.
No, you shouldn’t let some abstract concept of a stranger’s name being applied to a natural area affect your enjoyment of the latter.

I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,
= = =

The existence of gay marriage damages society.

Maybe if they were on their own island, never seen by anyone, they would not damage anyone else. Still wrong, though.

“I have always heard Mr. Carter was a fine person.”

My impression is he was/is an anti-Semite and supported abortion. Research some of his comments about Reagan and Trump. You have to decide if one can be that and a “fine person”?

Professionally, he did deregulate the airlines and appointed Paul Volker.

As a true American one must always avail oneself of the opportunities to visit historical sites when able and to reflect on how a great nation deals with the ebbs and flows of challenges to freedom, the Constitution, and to keep remembrance of the Declaration of Independence.

Enjoy, remember to keep the truth close always, and always be Proud to be an American!

Yes you would be, BUT you can redeem yourself by putting a rope around the neck of this statue and pulling it over.

A lot of Freepers are history buffs - both the good and the bad of history. It's only natural to visit it.

One other thing about Freepers - most don't give a damn what other Freepers think....

Seeing as the park is in GA, let me provide some regional context:

Stone Mountain is one of the highest-profile parks in the state. It’s “Rushmore South”, a massive sculpture paying tribute to the leaders of the Confederacy - easily construed as an enormous anti-American, pro-slavery, [insert objectionable category here] homage. Every day, thousands of people of all races, creeds, backgrounds, history, ethnicity, class, wealth, etc gather there to hike, picnic, shop, swim, camp, educate, play, whatever - with summer days ending with vast numbers congregating on the huge lawn and enjoying the fantastic light show commemorating local culture and history. Whatever the objections and differences, people set negatives aside to celebrate the good that is.

Do the same for JCNP. Yeah he sucked (I lived thru it) as POTUS, but he - and the area named after him - have much good to enjoy.

P.S.

Once flew into California and took time to visit the Reagan Presidential Library, great time. I also had a chance to visit the Nixon Library but chose not to because I still held a grudge for a man that chose poorly in a moment of paranoia and weakness. (I watched the Watergate hearings live as a high school senior) I could not conceive of a US President ever disgracing his oath, his office, or his nation.

I have always regretted not visiting The Nixon Library.

Yeah. Carter was a dim bulb. Gay marriage is a travesty. A “good Christian” would know that.

Carter is 97 years old. Why is Carter such a long liver? Because he has lots of little liver pills.

I’d say go, Carter was an incompetant president, but not a malevolent one like Obama or Biden.
