Cruise Industry Accuses CDC of Singling Out Sector With New Travel Advisory, Investigations
Newsweek ^ | 12/30/21 AT 2:06 PM EST | KATHERINE FUNG

Posted on 12/30/2021 11:58:26 AM PST by Capt. Tom

The cruise industry is slamming the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the agency's latest travel advisory recommending against cruise travel, which was announced after a series of COVID-19 cases were reported aboard dozens of ships.

"The decision by the CDC to raise the travel level for cruise is particularly perplexing considering that cases identified on cruise ships consistently make up a very slim minority of the total population onboard—far fewer than on land—and the majority of those cases are asymptomatic or mild in nature, posing little to no burden on medical resources onboard or onshore," the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said in a Thursday statement shared with Newsweek.

On Thursday, the CDC updated the health notice for cruise ship travelers from level three to level four, which means the agency is now recommending that all Americans avoid cruise travel, regardless of vaccination status.

"The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily between people in close quarters on board ships, and the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high, even if you are fully vaccinated and have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose," the CDC said.

On Thursday, CLIA accused the CDC of targeting the cruise industry even though rising cases of the virus have been reported in other sectors.

"No setting can be immune from this virus—however, it is also the case that cruise provides one of the highest levels of demonstrated mitigation against the virus," the CLIA said. "Cruise ships offer a highly controlled environment with science-backed measures, known testing and vaccination levels far above other venues or modes of transportation and travel, and significantly lower incidence rates than land."

You should care because there are a few hundred thousand American jobs dependent upon the cruise lines, hotel employees, airline employees, taxi drivers, employees of the cruise lines, travel agents, etc.

We’ve been on maybe 10 cruises and we rarely get off the ship. The ship is our destination.

I’ve read that most are not American employees. Where do you see that that is not the case? And again, at t he end of the day they are not American companies, not American ships, and not our concern.

The CDC is keeping the pressure on the Cruise Lines with statements like the following: -Tom

“In a statement, the agency said cruise lines reported 5,013 covid-19 cases on ships operating in U.S. waters between Dec. 15 and 29, a massive increase from the 162 cases reported over the prior two weeks.”

Norwegian entered into an experiment where they had three ships sailing in/around Hawaii, all with American crews. One of the reasons was to appeal to American union members.
This was not well received by the cruising public because of the crews displayed the kinds of attitudes expected of a New York cab driver. Norwegian has taken two of those ships out of service.

Not employees on the ships but there are hundreds of thousands of American citizens working ashore to support the cruising industry. I guess you don’t care about their jobs?

There are plenty of American companies begging for employees, why work for foreign companies that instead hire foreigners on ships and wherever they can?

I understand that you like your foreign cruises but don't go looking for US support, tax breaks, benefits, and all when you do so. These are companies that use H1B as well.

Instead of excuses, how about Buy American, Hire American? If we don't, meaning all of us, then who will.

17-day Panama Canal cruise in February, 2020. Six of us ladies of a certain age. We all got sick the last week of the cruise. At that point, there were already ominous warning signs of the new “China virus”. We heard through the ship grapevine that a couple of passengers on our cruise had been quarantined. We all kept our mouths shut, because all we wanted to do was get off the ship and go home. I would advise you that if you as much as sneeze, don’t say a word to anyone on the ship.

So why does NYC mandate vaccines to enter public spaces when the CDC says you shouldn’t go on a cruise regardless of vaccine status?

I know of no cruise line that receives more US support than any other corporation doing business in America.

If the US dropped the requirement to use union labor to build cruise ships and union labor to man them, then I will reconsider.

You miss the point. As foreign companies and foreign-flagged ships, they should get ZERO US SUPPORT. They are guests here at best, and if they are competing against US businesses, they should be blocked, taxed, tariffed, or whatever. Sorry, end of day, Buy American, Hire American. How about we talk about replacing these foreign ships and cruise lines with American ones?

And blaming it on unions is a stale excuse. Sure, get rid of the union-favoring laws but there are plenty of companies in the US that thrive despite union competition.

There is nothing preventing all those unemployed Americans from taking jobs on the cruise ships. In fact, you do meet a few that are Americans.

Should we insist that the cruise lines entering US waters only employ Americans or only operate US build ships? (You are aware that similar laws killed the US maritime industry?)

How about this: let’s insist that airlines flying into US airports only employ US citizens and only operate US built airplanes?

Or this: let’s insist that only products produced in US factors, by US companies, using US labor can be sold in US store?

Sounds like a good way to kill international trade and lower the living standards of all.

What I have a hard time understanding is, if you are not vaxxed and have no symptoms how in the world can you infect someone else. The only infection you can get is from someone who has been vaxed and the shot camouflages the symptoms enough so the person who had the shot does not even realize he or she is contagious. No wonder that within the confinement of a cruise ship, which makes the perfect PETRI DISH, even so they allow ONLY VAXXED persons, they spread and keep the virus alive like wildfire.
