Cruise Industry Accuses CDC of Singling Out Sector With New Travel Advisory, Investigations
Newsweek ^ | 12/30/21 AT 2:06 PM EST | KATHERINE FUNG

Posted on 12/30/2021 11:58:26 AM PST by Capt. Tom

The cruise industry is slamming the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over the agency's latest travel advisory recommending against cruise travel, which was announced after a series of COVID-19 cases were reported aboard dozens of ships.

"The decision by the CDC to raise the travel level for cruise is particularly perplexing considering that cases identified on cruise ships consistently make up a very slim minority of the total population onboard—far fewer than on land—and the majority of those cases are asymptomatic or mild in nature, posing little to no burden on medical resources onboard or onshore," the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said in a Thursday statement shared with Newsweek.

On Thursday, the CDC updated the health notice for cruise ship travelers from level three to level four, which means the agency is now recommending that all Americans avoid cruise travel, regardless of vaccination status.

"The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily between people in close quarters on board ships, and the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high, even if you are fully vaccinated and have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose," the CDC said.

On Thursday, CLIA accused the CDC of targeting the cruise industry even though rising cases of the virus have been reported in other sectors.

"No setting can be immune from this virus—however, it is also the case that cruise provides one of the highest levels of demonstrated mitigation against the virus," the CLIA said. "Cruise ships offer a highly controlled environment with science-backed measures, known testing and vaccination levels far above other venues or modes of transportation and travel, and significantly lower incidence rates than land."

Let this be a lesson to all you companies over there. When the CDC calls you say, “Sir, you’re the 10,000th caller and you’ve won an all-expense paid vacation to whatever destination you desire! Just tell us when and where!”

I am unvaccinated because I cannot find a vaccine that works against this virus. And I am old (86) and have plenty of comorbidities

Ironically, it might turn out that the sauna in the ship's spa (or hot tubs) is the best early therapy for treating COVID-19!

“They wouldn’t be allowed to enter ports without following CDC guidelines”

And how’s that working out for ‘em?

Okay, I have a Celebrity cruise scheduled for Jan. 21. What happens now? I hope Celebrity tells the CDC where to stuff it.

That’s entirely backwards. In fact, very few ports have denied cruise ships entry. It’s just that the media have been hyping every single instance of denied entry, along with every single case of Covid on a ship. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Florida being a huge cruise hub (some 60% of all US embarkations).

So if I go on my cruise next month, the worst case scenario I catch something like a cold that lasts a brief amount of time with the fringe benefit is that I have ENHANCED natural immunity. I’m still waiting to hear of ANY death caused by Omicron.

Our laws require that if you are foreign flagged and leave from a USA port you must stop at a foreign port, before returning.
So cruise lines figure they can stop at their private Island. But maybe they can’t.

Exactly. So far virtually all of the cases have been mild or asymptomatic. CDC is making a mountain out of a molehill.

Plus the CDC has lost a LOT of credibility the past 2 years. Hopefully, we will soon hear from Gov. DeSantis on this.

“WHY they do not hire American citizens for staff!!”

American citizens still want to be paid well — far better than the foreign crews they hire. Cruise lines absolutely could not afford to hire Americans. (Sadly.)

That would work for us, as we rarely disembark at the ports anyhow. Of course, if there’s a good pharmacy at the port we do go there. Amoxicillin. Cipro. Last cruise we should’ve stocked up on Ivermectin, but who knew...? And that was February 2020. Should-a, would-a, could-a. Din’t.
