Over the last year we have had long-awaited adaptions of classic science fiction and fantasy stories finally reach our screens, from Dune to Foundation to Wheel of Time. And the good times are set to continue with a tidal wave of big sci-fi and fantasy stories set to hit our screens in 2022.

This handpicked list of upcoming highlights doesn’t include a few big adaptations that we touched on in last year’s list but are still yet to reach our screens. So check our 2020 rundown for a look at titles including The Lord of the Rings, Sandman, Halo and The Last of Us.

Avatar 2 (December, cinemas) A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels20th Century Studios/Avatar The success of Avatar feels like a distant memory from a time back in 2010 when 3D films still impressed and Marvel hadn’t taken over the world. As the years passed, James Cameron’s plans for one sequel expanded into four more films, which would be shot back to back.

We now know Cameron has already shot most of episodes two and three, with Avatar 2 rumored to explore ocean worlds of the planet Pandora. Love it or hate it you will be seeing a lot more of the Avatar world over the next few years, and James Cameron is such an obsessive innovator these films will at the very least be technologically impressive.

How about Dan Simmonds series Hyperion. Or the Honor Harrington series and anything by John Ringo. The Honor Harrington series has a strong woman lead but she’s not woke.

+. The Expanse. Note to viewers - this show demands your full attention to completely understand the complexities of the story. Very well written and the special effects are excellent for a streaming series. Go Raci!

There are adult situations and F bombs. YMMV

I watched the first few episodes of the show and looked up the authors. I went out and bought the first 3 books right then and there, and I’d blown through them in less than a month. They’re BIG books, but they’re honestly quick reads. You get sucked into the story really quick. It’s hard to put them down.

It doesn’t bother me as much as it does some. We have gay friends IRL, and homosexuality isn’t being smashed in your face in either the books or the show. There aren’t any scenes with graphic sex (hetero or otherwise).

The warrior princesses are an interesting aspect. Bobbi Draper and Naomi are NOT Earthers, and some part of one of the books talked about how women from non-Earth locales were afforded a leg up on Earther men in some cases due to training in lower gravities. As a matter of fact, Naomi was damn near crippled on Ilus due to the gravity and almost died from cardiovascular issues. Interesting thought nonetheless.

That’s the general trend today with Hollywood et al in most movies. I think it’s because the hope, vision and passion and innovation are gone from their writers. IOW, just laziness and desire to cash out on the ability to take an old story, add new ‘politically correct and/or in-fashion’ actors and jazz up with current FX technology. For me, the new “Dune” is a prime example.

Check out “Predestination “.

My favorite low-budget scifi are (in no particular order):

  1. Predestination
  2. Primer
  3. Source Code
  4. Coherence

I smile when Bobby calls Amos “cupcake.”

I've been trying to get the quotes from this season on IMDB. There's four up so far -the latest from when Amos and Bobbie talk about his calling The Old Lady, "Chrissie."

SciFi’s technology and futureism are merely skins overlaying some kind of subtle/preachy message that is being recycled once more.

Or “A Star is Born”?......................

I view today’s obsession with Superhero comic movies as just being the modern version of ancient Greek & Roman mythological tales of their gods and demigods. No practical difference...................

How awful! SciFi’s technology and futureism are never merely skins overlaying some kind of subtle/preachy (or not subtle) woke or sensual message that is being recycled once more!

“Pride & Prejudice” (With Zombies).;-)
I have never seen any version of A Star IS Born.

Some remakes are good, some are duds. Ever watch the Maltese Falcon(1931)
Satan met a Lady(1936)
And the 1941 Bogart version?

Then some film scripts just have what is known as a ‘haircut’.
Poseidon Adventure = Daylight
Sahara = Last of the Comanches
The Magnificent Seven = Battle Beyond The Stars.
NORTHWEST PASSAGE = OPERATION BURMA

A modern version of “Deus ex Machina” in which the “god” comes down and whips you know what on all the bad guys?
