Over the last year we have had long-awaited adaptions of classic science fiction and fantasy stories finally reach our screens, from Dune to Foundation to Wheel of Time. And the good times are set to continue with a tidal wave of big sci-fi and fantasy stories set to hit our screens in 2022.
This handpicked list of upcoming highlights doesn’t include a few big adaptations that we touched on in last year’s list but are still yet to reach our screens. So check our 2020 rundown for a look at titles including The Lord of the Rings, Sandman, Halo and The Last of Us.
Avatar 2 (December, cinemas) A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels20th Century Studios/Avatar The success of Avatar feels like a distant memory from a time back in 2010 when 3D films still impressed and Marvel hadn’t taken over the world. As the years passed, James Cameron’s plans for one sequel expanded into four more films, which would be shot back to back.
We now know Cameron has already shot most of episodes two and three, with Avatar 2 rumored to explore ocean worlds of the planet Pandora. Love it or hate it you will be seeing a lot more of the Avatar world over the next few years, and James Cameron is such an obsessive innovator these films will at the very least be technologically impressive.
Kenobi (Disney+) Apart from a torrent of fan made posters we are yet to see any official images from the upcoming Kenobi series

never desired to see avatar 1.
disney phooked star wars so bad, nope nope nope!
Avatar was a crap movie... the Visuals were stunning, the story and movie overall? Snore fest... 20 years later making a sequel? Yea, I’ll pass.
Not impressed. I love science fiction, and I don’t understand why there’s so many remakes of Classics instead of new original stores
Me either and I have given up on modern movies in general as well as TV.
Asimov’s Foundation came out?? Didn’t notice.
At the time Avatar was made I came to believe that the more $ was spent on producing a SciFi movie, the worse it was. At that time Dsitrict 9 was released, comparatively low budget, and kicked the crap out of Avatar. Yes Avatar’s effects were great but the story was puerile garbage aimed at 12 year old intellects. Some of the best SciFi has been low budget. Terminator. Alien. Even the original Star Wars had a budget in line with most movies and not exceptional at the time.
Crap like Godzilla vs Kong or Transformers have huge budgets. And suck.
However, SciFi these days is usually very poorly done even the classics. Remember the two awful attempts to do Riverworld?
Has Asimov’s Foundation been realized yet? I shudder to think how badly it’s been done.
The one that could be brilliantly scathing would be ‘The Forever War’.
A micro-budget sci-fi you might enjoy:

Check out The Expanse. I’ve devoured the books and the Amazon show follows the books to a tee. The authors of the books worked on the screenplays with the series writers, and they have an amazing series. The final season (6) is upcoming. It’s worth your time to watch if you love sci-fi and appreciate when writers work with actual physicists to get details like orbital mechanics precise.
All these Amazon shows like Lord of the Rings and Wheel of Time look like SJW crap. They may not be, but they look it. Enough I have no interest.
Would love to some Heinlein books made into movies or series. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress wouldn’t require a huge budget.
Asimov’s Foundation came out??

The woke version, replaced the male lead with a female, other alterations.
Season 6 is out, 3 episodes so far.
This is probably the most well done series I have seen in decades.

Check out “Predestination “. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2397535/?ref_=nm_flmg_wr_3. It’s a darn faithful version of his short story mind game “All You Zombies.” I enjoyed it. There was also an old Saturday morning cartoon miniseries of Red Planet and it’s on YouTube as one piece. Lousy animation and kiddie fare, but they got the big themes right.
Yes Foundation has been overall very good. It is very unique in a good way.
And The Expanse I personally like. It is very well done only complaint is that they overplay the edgy emo on a couple of the leads regularly. But after you watch for a while the story is so extreme that being a bit over emo at times seems like the proper reaction.

Thanks I was wondering about that aspect. Don’t see how they are going to resolve all the conflicts, particularly the ‘ancient enemy’ part in time remaining while doing justice to the story.
Only ‘mistake’ is the sounds in space.
Is it worth buying the books after seeing the TV version?
