Texas A&M, the only team to beat No. 1 Alabama in 2021, suddenly ended its season on Wednesday by backing out of the Gator Bowl, citing injuries and a Covid-19 outbreak.
The Aggies had been set to play Wake Forest a week from Friday at the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl in Jacksonville before making the unexpected announcement.....
...“It is unfortunate, but we just don’t have enough scholarship players available to field a team,” A&M Coach Jimbo Fisher said.
Aggies Athletic Director Ross Bjork called the decision "heartbreaking" for everyone associated with the famed 12th Man program....

Amazing, since that means they will lose a lot of money. Supposedly, Rutgers is next in line to play in the bowl.
This won’t be the last episode....might be several bowl games which get a new team or two.
I expect March Madness to go the same way, where you have three starters out with Covid and the team debates whether to attend and do a dismal showing for the initial game.

I think it was more than COVID. They don’t play until the 12/31. They just lost their starting abs to the portal. I think another player opted out.

Several players decided to go pro also. ESPN reported that the team was not able to put enough players on the field.
According to SEC rules, they did not meet the minimum requirement for players. However, the rules also state it is still the school’s option. So much for the 12th Man tradition.
