There’s no Christmas without panettone. Or so say 70 per cent of Italians, who admit they cannot fathom a festive season without their beloved sweet bread.
Before its recent rise to fame in the US and the UK, the staple festive treat had adorned Italy’s kitchens for centuries and in a variety of forms. From honeyed bread in ancient Rome, or a simple loaf with sugar and raisins in the Middle Ages, to the present-day buttery version, packed with raisins and candied fruits.
For some families, however, this Christmas stands to be somewhat bittersweet. In addition to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Italians have been struggling for months with the effects of a steep rise in the costs of consumer goods, including a 35 per cent increase in wheat and butter, key ingredients for the panettone.

Trader Joe’s had shelves full of Panettones....at the same price they’ve always been.
Would they be interested in last year’s fruit cake?
“... interested in last year’s fruit cake?”
Now you are just being cruel, seowulf. :)
panettone. Meh
Having married into an Italian family I can tell you that
panettone isn’t even as good as last years fruit cake.
What about panforte?
panettone is good.
Frangelico is hard to find this year as well and Frangelico goes very well with Panettone.
They could always switch over to Frosted Flakes. Tony sez they’re grrreat.
> panettone. Meh
Agree! And I grew up in an Italian immigrant family.
I love panettone bread.
Not that crazy about fruitcake, but really there’s hardly any comparison between the two.
The crap here is not like the stuff in Italy.
Seen them but never had one. Regardless I’ll see your panforte and raise you one good American Bacardi Rum Cake.
These all sound yummy.....

(Yeah....overlook that it’s WaComPost)
How much is this bread that a 35% increase in cost makes it unaffordable?
$200 a loaf?
I mean if it’s beloved and all.
Fine, but German stolen (pronounced: "Shtohlen") is the way to go.
Like the kind my grandmother and great aunt Clara used to make.
Slather a slice of that with a load of butter and have it with your coffee.
Mmmmmmm....
Yup, a real Panettone takes 36 hrs to make.
This year, so did Wally World. The delicious bread, its unique form sealed in a gift box. Less than $10 each. More exact: Give or take $5. We purchased a number of them for remembrance gifts and a few for ourselves. Not being a connoisseur Panettone critic: the bread might have been on the ‘dry side” but it was eaten and thoroughly enjoyed. The bakery brand: Bauducco Panettone Classic. The display managed to make a rapid disappearance from the store. Two days later, not even one remained.
To be honest, this Texan prefers the panettone over the Famous Corsicana Fruit cake from Collins Street Bakery.
A lovely Merry Christmas to one and all!
I got 3 home made banana nut breads here and hell yeah I slather butter in it :p
