Just days after the Sun blasted Earth with an M-Class solar flare which created an unexpected G1-Class Geomagnetic Storm, the sun erupted another M-class solar flare towards the Earth earlier today. Today’s flare blasted the Earth with X-rays and UV radiation, triggering a shortwave radio black out over portions of the globe. On Saturday, NOAA forecasters said there was a risk of additional solar flares through today and as predicted, it occured. While Saturday’s solar flare erupted from sunspot Active Region-2911; today’s flare came from Active Regions 2908.
In a statement released by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center today, they said, “This flare was associated with coronal mass ejection (CME) signatures noted in radio observatory data and GOES-SUVI imagery. The source of this flare was NOAA/SWPC Region 2908. Analysis of this potential CME will continue as more data and coronagraph imagery become available.”
Solar Radiation Storms can cause several impacts near Earth. When energetic protons collide with satellites or humans in space, they can penetrate deep into the object that they collide with and cause damage to electronic circuits or biological DNA. During the more extreme Solar Radiation Storms, passengers and crew in high flying aircraft at high latitudes may be exposed to radiation risk. During such storms, commercial aircraft can be routed away from areas with the greatest radiation risks. According to the SWPC, when the energetic protons collide with the atmosphere, they ionize the atoms and molecules thus creating free electrons. These electrons create a layer near the bottom of the ionosphere that can absorb High Frequency (HF) radio waves making radio communication difficult or impossible.
NOAA’s SWPC categorizes Solar Radiation Storms using their Space Weather Scale on a scale from S1-S5. A Solar Radiation Storm can persist for time periods ranging from hours to days.

Nooooooo!!!!!!!
M class? Not that big of a deal. When you get above about X10 on the flare scale, now that’s something to worry about. The 1989 Canadian blackout was caused by an X15 solar flare.
i wish it was a class x flare
Do the Corp bean counters allow that?
The list of what to worry about is repeated and added to every day. Where is that 6 mile wide asteroid that is going to make a direct hit on Washington DC and create A 120 mile wide crater ? Please God.....
I blame global warming
Come on Solar Flare! Let’s just end this now!
When biden is supposed to be delivering his threats to the unvaxxed would be a good time for a massive solar flare to knock out communications.
The SFI Index is 123 right now. Great for hams but the bands have been a little noisy.
It’s almost like there’s a lot more to learn about solar activity. You know, solar activity, that thing that controls the environments temperature and climate.
One of my kids is an engineer at NASA. His college job was on a solar observatory satellite mission.
He asked his boss, a real-life scientist who has been studying the sun for decades what he thought about global warming.
Exact quote “It’s a bunch of Hooey.”
OH NOOOS!
This will cause that Antarctic shelf to break off and drown everyone near a coastline!
