Back in college, I knew people who called themselves Marxists. They read long volumes of dense and nearly impenetrable prose expounding the theory in great detail, and thought it was all highly sophisticated. My observation was that it boiled down to nothing more complex than blaming all the problems of the world on the evil actions of a cabal of bad guys, who however hadn’t done anything specific that was illegal or even unethical that you could put your finger on. In classic economic Marxism the bad guys were the capitalists, who had somehow hoarded all the money to themselves and were “exploiting” the working class by offering jobs. In the more recent Neo-Marxist derivative of Critical Race Theory, it’s the cis-gender white males, who practice “whiteness” and “systemic racism,” and thus are able to “oppress” people of other races and genders.
But these evil cabals can work in devious ways. Most recently we have had a complete blow-out of new government spending, fiscal deficits, and money creation by the Federal Reserve. Classic monetary theory would tell you to expect a bout of severe inflation to follow with a lag of some months. And sure enough, we are having a sudden spike of inflation, recently hitting 6.8% at an annualized rate in the most recent data. The inflation has been particularly severe in prices of food and energy.
Might this round of inflation have something to do with these government policies, taken to extremes in the near year under President Biden? Or alternatively, is government policy blameless, and the whole mess a consequence of nefarious conduct by the bad guys?
Let’s consult a few Democratic sources:
President Biden. On November 17 the New York Times reported on a visit Biden made to an auto factory in Detroit. Among the remarks he made: “Mr. Biden asked the Federal Trade Commission to consider whether large oil and gas companies were artificially pushing up gasoline prices for American consumers, the administration’s latest effort to target concentration in the energy industry in a bid to bring down costs. . . . Mr. Biden’s letter to Lina Khan, the antitrust champion he appointed as the commission’s chair, claims ‘mounting evidence of anti-consumer behavior by oil and gas companies.’”
Elizabeth Warren. Here’s Senator Warren on Facebook just yesterday: “Families are rightly upset that the price of meat has gone through the roof. Who’s to blame? Meatpacking monopolies that are using inflation as a cover to raise prices and make record profits.”
Robert Reich. You probably know of Reich as a prominent TV talking head, left-wing economist, and former Labor Secretary under President Clinton. From Reich’s piece in Salon, December 1: “What's really driving inflation? Corporate greed. Giant corporations with little to no competition are driving price increases. The biggest culprit for rising prices that's not being talked about is the increasing economic concentration of the American economy in the hands of a relative few giant big corporations with the power to raise prices.”
Jen Psaki. From Psaki’s press briefing just today, as reported in the Daily Mail: “White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki denounced the 'greed of meat conglomerates' during her Tuesday press briefing when addressing the economic pain caused to American families by soaring prices at the grocery store. During her daily news conference Psaki was asked whether President Joe Biden agreed with progressive groups that 'corporate greed is a big driver of inflation right now.’ . . . [She responded,] ‘So, for example, the President, the Secretary of Agriculture have both spoken to what we've seen as the greed of meat conglomerates.’”
Here’s what nobody asks any of these people: Weren’t these companies just as greedy back when Trump was President? Indeed, isn’t their whole job to make as much money as possible for the shareholders? And yet oil and gasoline prices were consistently low under Trump, and for that matter even fell while Obama was President. Food inflation also was largely under control under both Obama and Trump.
For that matter, aren’t the makers of digital electronic stuff like smart phones and laptops just as greedy as food and energy companies? And yet their prices have been consistently dropping during my entire lifetime.
It doesn’t seem to me that the “greedy corporations” line has any explanatory power at all as to the current (or any other) round of inflation. Even raising it is treating the voters with disdain and contempt. But it must poll well.
Those greedy millionaires and billionaires and those making $15.01 an hour or more!
I really have no problem taxing these woke corporations into oblivion. If you are going to carry water for the left, you get leftist policies.
Corporate America is doing more to promote racism against White people and transgenderism, I have no reason to defend Amazon’s profit margin while they continue to crush all competition in the retail sector.
Even if they are woke Corporations like Joke-a Cola, "woke" will not save them.
And now we have a new Geriatric Idiot Nazi in charge:

Nazificator Joe needs ejection from office.
Exactly. Why help out our enemies? If they want to promote socialism, give it to them good and hard.
Biden & Co. expect corporations to be "altruistic." They expect them to transform into "charitable organizations."
Regards,
Worked pretty well in Venezuela!
when socialist muck up an economy.. they ALWAYS start by calling the businesses greedy, then come the price controls, then they TAKE the businesses and then guess what.. your communist!
Amen, I have no dog in that fight.
Marxism is greed flavored envy. The leftists sit on the sidelines of life blaming their relative poverty on the people who got in the game and worked.
I once tried to convince a schoolboy Marxist that the average German electrician was far wealthier than Louis14th of France and he laughed at me. I asked at what price could the Sun King fly to London, obtain a shot of penicillin or flush a toilet? The schoolboy understood none of those as wealth.
Collectivism destroys innovation because it poisons initiative. Wealth springs for innovation, initiative and willingness to risk.
Take from the rich and give to the poor. It's as simple as that.
I am not addressing the immorality of stealing from the rich.
I am also not mentioning who it is that does the 'taking and giving' (while keeping a 70% cut. hint: it's the government)
Also forgetting the lack of motivation inspired when you give people money for doing nothing, or when you steal the fruits of their labor from those who DO want to work- to give to those who won't work.
OR (and this is rarely mentioned) the loss of any 'work product' in this transfer of money for no reason.
What's left to understand?
I do think that some companies that provide mandated purchases ARE GREEDY.
Insurance is the best example.
Everyone MUST have auto coverage.
Everyone with a mortgage MUST have home owner coverage.
I don’t know if I am experiencing a Florida problem or is this widespread across the country ?
In the past 12 months seen different family home owner premiums ...
Go from $2500 to $3500
Go from 5k to 10k
Go from 1300 to 2200
Go from 750 to 1200
Can freeper from other states please post their changes in the last 12 months?
I consider companies greedy because they won’t share in the suffering. Some of the companies are sort of ‘not for profit’ where their employees can get good size raises all while the rest of the state and citizens don’t see any more $$$. These companies could cut corners, minimize raises, stop wasting internally, etc.
.
Mr. Biden asked the Federal Trade Commission to consider.
Opening line for more regulations the democrats love them they get a lot of palm money.
It’s why Trump and companies and the public did much better after he got rid the democrat scams.
The democrats hated him for not being an insider good old boy.
They are our enemies, conjoined with the left and convenient winky winky targets of the Democrats. Then they all divide the spoils with their leftist political allies.
Well....that’s what Gingers say...it’s what they do... . just ask Cartman from South Park....
When, in the course of two years or so, you raise the expectations of new hires from $8 an hour to $15 an hour, bad things are going to happen.
The young people we hire - mostly high school and college age, still living with mom and dad - were happy that we started them out at $1 over minimum wage. Our work is not difficult nor physically demanding. It is MUCH better than working at a fast food restaurant.
Fast forward two years and we - literally a mom and pop business - are competing with Chick-fil-a starting the kids out at $14 an hour, McDonalds is $13 an hour, bagging groceries is $13.50 an hour and if you are with them for a year you qualify for free medical insurance.
Our only option is to seriously raise prices. Just to make the same profit margin - which isn’t anything to brag about in the imprinted sportswear industry - I will have to sell shirts I sold for $7 each (in quantity) in 2019 for over $9 each next year. So that plumbing company I sell 100 shirts to will pay $200 more for the same order. They, too, are dealing with artificially increased payroll, plus increases in parts, plus increased in stuff like uniforms. So their prices will go up.
The upward spiral would be bad if wages were the only issue. Add in transportation costs increasing (due to changes in government policy) and excessive printing of currency to pay for government spending and you have a perfect storm of runaway inflation.
Hang on, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Is anybody suggesting that outsourcing to China started only after Biden got in office?
Unfortunately the woke CEO’s don’t care if the companies they run pay more in taxes. The stockholders mainly take the hit.
