Biden's vaccine mandate is on hold, but companies are moving ahead anyway [My Q on vaxxed but against mandates]

Kropp said with many businesses planning to reopen offices early next year for the first time since the start of the pandemic, employers also have to worry about employees not wanting to return to the office without the assurance that their co-workers are all vaccinated as well. That's another reason that some employers will go ahead with their own rules, even if the ongoing court battles mean the federal rules won't go into effect by the planned date of January 4.

And while people love to hate on HR, my experience is that they've had to pull some incredible Jedi tricks over the past 2 years...imagine dealing with FReepers AND DUmmies in the same office.

My HR department is excellent, as I've stated here before. They have quite the juggling act keeping a diverse group of employees happy and productive. The two primary goals of a good HR department is to recruit and KEEP top talent and to keep the company out of court as much as possible. Lower level employees might see the HR department as an adversary with all their rules and (sometimes) silly initiatives but as a manager, I see their value. They've saved my bacon a number of times and during this government-initiated vaccine madness, they've quietly behind the scenes worked out reasonable exemptions for good employees who feel strongly against taking these shots (including myself).

A good HR department will do all they can to retain top talent and will fully support management's efforts to keep the company running during these turbulent times.

As far as you thinking the sentence "employees not wanting to return to the office without the assurance that their co-workers are all vaccinated as well." is a plant, I agree with you but there is another aspect to this as well.

There are certain employees in my own company who have gotten rather used to working at home and not having to go into the office. Not surprisingly, they tend to be our weaker employees. All our top performers are eager to come back to the office and during this whole time have had no problem visiting clients in person as needed and coming into the office on at least a semi-regular basis.

So now that we have announced a company wide "return to the office" policy in January, we do have some employees using the "only if everybody is vaccinated card."

Now my company has already granted exemptions to roughly 10% of our workforce but HR has decided that they will not disclose to employees who has been vaccinated and who has been exempted. Instead, they will consider everybody in compliance who has either been vaccinated or exempted. To do otherwise, would be to have about 10% of our employees (including myself) treated as lepers in the workplace, before forced to wear the "scarlet letter" so to speak.

I think that is an excellent move. Everybody back in the office in January and nobody's business whether or not your co-workers are vaccinated or exempted. If you feel that strongly about it, find another job. Or wear your damn mask at the office to your heart's content.

My impression is that the information we get is not put into the sort of structure that allows people to get a full picture of what is happening, which is especially important when dealing with very large numbers (like X out of 100K). I am continually “translating” those numbers (X of 100K = .000X% if X<10 [if I have that right...]) and making little pictures to see how what is said works, but not everyone has the time or is willing to do that.

How can they prove you caught covid at work? If an employee ate out, went to a drive thru window, shopping, visit etc… they could have caught it anywhere. Further, could they not catch it from a family member? Proving you got it at work is a dirty long slog of a legal fight.

The PTB don’t need to have the media pathways reverberating with discoverable mandate details to reach business execs that would actually carry it out.

They have their own Brotherhood system of backchannels through which the main corruptibility has long traveled.

The details are what matter—and there is no way that companies are going to share the “special deals” they have made with highly valued employees.

If they don’t value an employee enough to offer them a “special deal”, that is called a clue that the employee needs to be looking elsewhere for long term future employment.

Something tells me, that this sentence is a plant.

Unfortunately, we have a least one of those at my company's HQ.

As soon as the courts held up the Biden "mandate" the large, multi-national bank I work for put vaccine requirements on-hold and said "everyone will be welcomed back to the office in January."

Since then we now have another variant that put return to office on hold too.

Like the 15% mid-year raise outside of the normal review & raise cycle, and the unexpected mid-year bonus, which far exceeded my regular bonus from last year?

Those kinds of special deals?

Money is good—but secret exemption from vaccine requirements is even better.

Word is, our HR department is approving every single religious exemption they receive. Zero push back. Been that way since the beginning. We can't afford to lose anyone with more than 300 high paying I.T. gigs open and difficulty in finding anyone to fill them at the moment.

We're not unique here. EVERYONE in Financial Services is having the same problem.

I've been working from home since my company first started requiring wearing masks. And I'm not going back until I don't have to wear a mask.

During this time, my personal and team productivity has been at record levels, and we are continuing to bring in more projects than ever.

The upshot is that not all who work from home are slackers.

Nah.

You have been “vaccinated”. How do you get the Kung-Flu?

I am not saying there never was a COVID but last year we had under 2000 flu cases total according to the CDC. We normally have 30 to 60 million in a normal flu season, more in a heavy year. I am pretty sure it is because all flu cases were just called COVID last year and not because there really were almost zero flu cases. I had a very nasty 2 week bug in Afghanistan in December 2020 that was diagnosed as an unknown virus, maybe it was COVID? I don’t know much about the science but I don’t believe that the 30 -60 million flu cases we have in the USA every year just disappeared.

Thank you for your (as is usual) thoughtful reply.

So now that we have announced a company wide "return to the office" policy in January, we do have some employees using the "only if everybody is vaccinated card."

Now THAT is clever. Unprofessional, but clever.

Everybody back in the office in January and nobody's business whether or not your co-workers are vaccinated or exempted. If you feel that strongly about it, find another job. Or wear your damn mask at the office to your heart's content.

Now, I suspect (again, depending upon state and municipality rules) those who've taken the shots needn't wear masks - but some will stay masked out of fear - while those granted an exemption must mask-up. It still creates the possibility of "Mask=Scarlet A".

That said, your employer is to be commended for their policy of respecting people's conscience. Cynically, I feel many of the private sector (and maybe public sector, too) vaxx mandates are back-door RIF programs.

I totally agree. They used every tactic to inflate the numbers.

That’s why I think some of these people that think they had CoVID twice is because one of the two times was a false positive and was flu or a bad cold.

But who knows for sure. I couldn’t be eating those words in a few months.
