Popeyes opens first location in England. Its biscuits mystify British diners

Hundreds of Londoners lined up for a sample of Popeyes chicken this weekend, as the franchise opened its first restaurant in the United Kingdom.

The New York Times is reporting the event had its moments of culture shock, as British diners weren’t fully acquainted with the Popeyes biscuit, as the word usually means what Americans would refer to as a “cookie.”

“It looks like a scone,” Victoria Ubochi said after trying the biscuit, “but it doesn’t taste like one.”

Tom Crowley, the chief executive of Popeyes U.K., told the newspaper that focus groups showed Britons were a bit flummoxed by the buttermilk biscuit.

On top of that, biscuits resemble scones, usually served with hot tea instead of fried chicken.

“I guess if we ran with the research,” Crowley said, “we probably wouldn’t have done it, if I’m honest.”

It kind of mystified me when they brought me pork and beans with stewed tomatoes next to a runny egg for breakfast.

Lol. An old joke something like, “British went around the world invading countries for their spices, then never used any of them” :).

There’s another meme showing a picture of beans on toast with the caption, “England be eating like the German are still flying overhead”

‘Biscuits’ are cookies in the UK.
US biscuits are more like scones, but, as the guy said, don’t taste like them.
I wonder what Brits think of bagels?

They market Louisiana cooking without all that crawdad/mudbug/gator on menu..

And one need not travel to or through Louisiana, to get a taste..

Sometimes Popeyes isn’t even in rough neighborhoods.

I recall one being part of a truck stop in Oregon.
If truckers will eat it, it’s okay by me..

I don’t really care what the Brits thing of anything.

They have allowed their Country sink lower than we are. We are chasing them , but they still lead us.

I understand that Any Nation that picks a Lying Bastard like Joe Biden to lead them doesn’t have much room to talk.

The words, “Joe Biden” and “President” should never be uttered in the same sentence.

I was in Lafayette Louisianna last month. Loking for a fast food meal. Google Maps said the Popeye’s close to my hotel was an all you can eat buffet.

Oh yes. But when I got there, they said the dining room is closed due to covid. No buffet. Total bummer.

But it turns out, what I’ve read, that Popeye’s location is the only Popeye’s buffet in the country.

I remember there were some KFC buffets once. I wonder if there are still any that do all you can eat?

There are some good Brit thinks to eat in reality. Shepherds pie, Yorkshire Pudding, the way they make roasts, Beef Wellington, Fish and Chips. Crumpets.

But as with their engineering, sometimes they go completely off the rails.

Popeye’s sux. Now they’ll think that’s how good fried chicken is made here.

The Brits lurve McDonalds and Starbucks, so they’ll probably dig some Popeyes.

I bet London mayor Khan will ban Popeye’s from seasoning their green beans with ham for not being halal.

They'll probably put curry on everything.

Now if Popeye’s would start to sell kidney pie, Brits would flock to them in huge numbers.
