My mother adored him and hated Lewis. I always found jerry Lewis came off as narcissistic and mean. My mother always used to say he wasn’t the drinker he portrayed himself to be it was an act. That he could not possibly do the career he had if he were.
She was right.

IMO, he was the best singer of that era - much better than Sinatra. Smooth voice.

My favorite singer from that era. I like Sinatra’s music, but never cared for him as a person. Martin always seemed to be having a good time —you can even hear it in his voice just listening to recordings — and his easy-going manner welcomed audiences to join him.

The Matt Helm movies were a hoot and a great fit for Martin.
He always came across as a class act.

Love, love, love Dean Martin. Great, great, great entertainer and the coolest voice of the era. To my dad, he was “Dino”. I will be watching.

The drinker image seemed to go with his voice. I mean he wasn't sharply and crisply enunciating everything. More like the opposite.
Also his stage and screen personality had to do with who he was playing opposite. I don't think he did the drunk bit in his films with Jerry Lewis, but later it gave him a way of distinguishing himself from Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack. Sinatra had to be top dog, and Dean and the others had to work around that and find a way to fit in and to stand out.

Sway - Dean MartinI love this performance, but once I understood him to say, "other dancers may pee on the floor", I always think of that, but I still always listen to his fantastic talent. Yes, I've always thought he was better than ol Blue Eyes.

Thanks for the post. This is a great distraction from the sad state of affairs we find ourselves in today. I have spent hours watching old clips and complete shows of Martin, Rickles and Carson over the past couple of years. An era when comedy was actually funny.
