The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis
Deadline ^ | November 4, 2021 | Jill Goldsmith

"FPA founder and artistic director Max McLean stars as middle-aged Lewis recalling events that began his journey from vigorous debunker of Christianity to one of the most influential Christian writers of the past century. The film is based on the play C.S. Lewis on Stage: The Most Reluctant Convert that premiered in 2016. Play and film are both taken from Lewis’ memoir, Surprised by Joy, which is licensed from the C.S. Lewis Company.

“When we began working on our distribution of the film, we had a handful of theatres, mostly in major markets, with one showing on one day on November 3,” said McLean. “I am grateful to the tens of thousands of people who came out to fill theaters in almost every major city throughout the country.”

The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C.S. Lewis

My apologies. This film was scheduled as a one night event at selected theaters around the country. It was screened last night. I had meant to alert you, but I got caught up in the recent festivities down Virginia way and forgot.

The good news is that it had an excellent, pack the house reception, probably from assorted church and Christian groups. Many theaters have now announced extended runs. I've checked here and am glad to see that I'll have multiple opportunities next week.

The movie industry is watching this sort of thing very carefully because the adult and art house audiences have been slow to return post-COVID, though the comic book movie crowd seems to be back. A lot of release decisions are pending and will be influenced by how many people under the age of 30 start to show up.

The Most Reluctant Convert is a biopic adopted from a one-man stage play. I therefore assume it will be somewhat "theatrical" in style, which is ok with me.

Has anyone seen it yet? Given the topic, it's one that most of us should probably watch on principle when it's available for streaming. And if you're looking for a reason to check out your local theater, this might be one to support.

I had thought to propose a Halloween movie for November in honor of the season, but given that this film will have a very limited viewing window, Halloween can wait. It’s been a dud year in the horror flick department anyhow.

If you want off the movie ping list, freepmail me.

That should be “how many people OVER the age of 30 show up.” I have my eye on half a dozen promising 2021 films. NONE of them has reached the theaters yet. As always, I worry about where the industry is headed, and that depends ultimately on audiences.

Interesting, thank you very much for pinging me!

I knew nothing of this, and was just recommending “The Screwtape Letters” to a co-worker this morning!

Keep me on this list. I agree about the current crop of movies are ... (remove the ‘o’ and replace with ‘a’)!

I will look for this movie locally in Pinellas County FL.

If I want to be terrified I don’t turn on a horror movie, I just watch Biden’s latest press conference.

I am not sure I will ever go to a movie theater again.

In my younger days, I recall going to as many as three movies in a week...there always was a lot to choose from, fun and interesting.

I valued the theater experience. Culturally, I appreciated having “shared” experiences like that with other people.

But the last several times I went, a few years ago, it was simply awful. I had to tell a row of teenagers in front of me to be quiet and put away their phones. They stopped.

For about 15 seconds.

Re: horror films. I had hopes for Last Night in Soho but the reviews are underwhelming. That said, I will still get around to it, since I am officially committed to watch anything Thomasin McKenzie is in. You are free to disagree, but you are not eligible to argue the point here unless you have watched Leave No Trace. Which is, by the way, "our kind of movie," at least in cultural and thematic terms, even if you prefer other genres.

I used to be a big fan of horror films. I guess I've seen too many and/or aged out a long time ago. I do highly recommend Cabin in the Woods, which is hilarious. And 30 Days of Night was a welcome relief from glittery romantic hero vampires.

I had to listen to my TDS-ridden moonbat of a brother-in-law at a Halloween Party. That’s enough horror for the entire year.

Thang you for the post.

I had a very close freind, we were like brothers.

He chided and kinda mocked Christianity occasionally.

One year for his birthday I bought him C.S. Lewis’ book

Mere Christianity

It offended him deeply , he refused to even read it and give it a fair evaluation.

He didn’t even want to be around me afterward.

Life is sad sometimes.

I pray he reads it someday, or sees this movie.

Have not seen this one yet.

Do have tickets for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. And our local theater is doing the original Ghostbusters so I picked up tickets for that to. Because that way at least I am assured of one good movie.

a one-man stage play

Reminds me of my off-Broadway one-man play, La Cochina. I never did find that script again after I moved!

The movie, “Shadowlands(s)” was very good. I don’t know how accurate it was.

I saw it last night, and it was excellent.
High production values, and very faithful to Lewis’ writings and thoughts. Others we talked to thought the same. If you like C.S. Lewis, you will NOT be disappointed. See it.

Thanks for reminding me. I’ve not seen it but I’ve added it to my watchlist.

I enjoyed “Tolkien” as well. The religious themes obviously are there, as they must be on any movie about Tolkien, but its focus is more the “true” backstory of Beren and Luthien.

This is a clip, not the trailer, but it’s worth viewing for those who are aware of the iconic status of the phrase “cellar door.” It also contains one of the great single lines of recent film history: “Is it a proud and opinionated princess.” If they gave Oscars for single lines, this would get at least a nomination.
