How chronic intestinal inflammation can cause cancer (Rapamycin “significantly reduced”)
Medical XPress / Kiel University / Gastroenterology ^ | Nov. 1, 2021 | Frederike Buhse / Lina Welz et al

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are inflammations of the gastrointestinal tract which flare up in phases and are accompanied by bloody bowel movements, diarrhea and severe impairment of the quality of life. IBD patients exhibit an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. This is facilitated by the fact that DNA in the intestinal mucosa cells (intestinal epithelium) is damaged by chronic inflammatory processes. Upon DNA damage, a cell in a healthy state protects itself from accumulation of a defective genome by not dividing further. However, these protective mechanisms are suspended under inflammatory conditions, which promotes the development of bowel cancer. It is not yet understood why these protective mechanisms become dysfunctional in the event of chronic inflammation.

Potential therapeutic approach

In medicine, the mTOR signaling pathway has long been used as a therapeutic target for other diseases, and could provide a new early access for cancer treatment. The researchers treated mice and cell systems that display increased DNA damage and a defective XBP1 gene with a specific inhibitor of the mTOR pathway, the pharmacological substance Rapamycin. "In our models, Rapamycin significantly reduced the increased cell division and the resulting damage to the intestinal epithelium," reported Aden.

"Although we have known for a long time that cancer can arise from chronic intestinal inflammation, we only know relatively little about the underlying processes. Our results now provide a new link between inflammation, disturbed cell division and repair of genetic material," reported senior author Professor Philip Rosenstiel.

There appears to be another option soon for these sufferers.

Rapamycin is a potential anti-ageing drug

I just eat lots of very spicy food and lots of fiber and stay away from all meds, including aspirin. Easier.

Untreated acid reflux can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, which is pre-cancerous. I’ve had Barrett’s esophagus for many years, but it hasn’t advanced because I take medication twice a day.

I take 1 omeprazole 20mg for mine every day. I have been for years. Sometimes, if that’s not enough, I’ll have a glass of lactose free milk and it’s all good.

Yeah, I've had IBD for 15 years or so; it originally manifested itself with frequent bouts of diverticulitis which is a painful colon inflammation where food particles get lodged in little pockets in your intestines called diverticuli.

I still have to watch my diet and what I eat so as not to inflame my intestines.

My VA doc has me on 2X 20 mg/daily Omeprazole and nightly intakes of an osmotic laxative which has me sitting on the toilet a lot in the morning but has kept me free of more painful diverticulitis bouts thankfully.

Not fun getting old, I'm 70, got a clean colonoscopy procedure 2 years ago and am just living with the ailment.

It could be worse.

Despite the fact that I take two 30 mg. tablets of Lansoprazole twice a day, from time to time, I still experience acid reflex after I’ve gone to bed. Thankfully, it doesn’t happen very often, but if it does, I’ve found that eating a banana will eliminate it entirely. If I eat something that I think might come back and haunt me later, I’ll eat a banana before I go to bed. It neutralizes the acid in my stomach, and I can go to bed without having to worry about being woken up an hour later. I had my gall bladder out in 2015, so whatever bile there is, goes directly into the intestines. Many people who have had their gall bladder removed, end up with diarrhea, but I’m one of the lucky ones. I can eat anything I want, and not get diarrhea.

“doc has me on 2X 20 mg/daily Omeprazole”

Same here except one 40mg/day. Insurance covers the Rx 40 but not the OTC 20.

That’s great! I don’t have a gall bladder anymore, either. They took it out back in May during my transplant surgery. I have a new liver, but they leave out the gall bladder. I don’t have much trouble with diarrhea, but I like your tip about bananas. Hope you don’t mind if I adopt it…😀

This Chiquita Banana commercial is as old as me:

Plus there's some good advice on eating bananas...

Forgot to mention that bananas are a good source of potassium, but don’t eat them when they are green, as their potassium level tends to be lower than the ripe ones.

Somehow I doubt this very much.

Buy a green banana and let it sit on your kitchen counter until it becomes yellow. Just where did the extra potassium come from? The air? Sunlight?

Fiber is not something required by the body to operate, and doctors like Bill Davis have been saying we need to change the mindset that’s increased rates of cancer and other diseases since the mid-80s. Cut the wheat out of your diet, and so many problems suddenly disappear. I’m 4 months without wheat, and I can’t begin to explain how good I feel on a daily basis.

Our government changed the dietary game in the mid-80s, and we’ve been paying for it ever since.

Actually I don't eat too much wheat. I get most of the fiber in my diet from green papaya and morning glory stems.

Natural fiber such as pectin in fruit is one thing, but the idea that “whole natural grains” is somehow necessary for human physiology is demonstrably false, but the food industry has been profiting off of it for decades.

Ok, doesn’t surprise me that the food lobby in the US, in full cooperation with the USDA, is pushing a false narrative.

But here on the beach in Thailand, my diet is very different than what most people in America eat. Lots of fresh fish and seafood, pork with no antibiotics and hormones and chicken that is, for all intents, is “free range.” Fresh veggies and tropical fruits. 90% of the carbs come from rice grown on small farms. I only eat “western” food maybe once every week or two.

Yeah I was thinking about that. I have bloodwork in a little while so this morning I’m fasting, I’ll get the results later today, potassium and magnesium levels amongst everything else…..
The only thing I hate is the fasting :^p

Rice is a lesser evil in the grand scheme of things, but there’s plenty of science to back up it’s unnecessary. Abstinence from wheat is really the best prescription right now, IMO.
