Where the Heck Are We Going to Charge All of the Electric Cars? (only 9.24 years left)
Slate ^ | 10/28/21 | Henry Grabar

Posted on 10/30/2021 6:38:44 AM PDT by Libloather

On May 7, 2019, Lisa Lemble and Robert Gordon cut the ribbon on Ann Arbor, Michigan’s first curbside electric vehicle charger. It was an ordeal that required nearly a year of negotiation and permitting, and cost the couple about $15,000. “Mainly we want people to know that if they live in the city of Ann Arbor and don’t have a driveway and don’t have access to a garage, that it’s possible to put in a charging station curbside,” Lemble said at the time.

Possible, yes. Easy, no. More than two years after the Tesla-owning couple installed their dual-nozzle Level 2 charger on the curb in front of their condo, their example has not caught on. Missy Stults, the sustainability and innovations manager for Ann Arbor, said she does not know of another such project in this city of 120,000, home to the University of Michigan.

“It is so bedeviling,” Stults said. “Multifamily is a large portion of our housing stock and we start to have challenges.” The city estimates it needs as many as 10,000 electric vehicle chargers to prepare for full electric-vehicle adoption, and Stults is focused on getting them into publicly accessible parking lots - like the four “fast chargers” in the City Hall parking lot Ann Arbor put online just this Monday.

As for the streets, where residents like Lemble and Gordon park? “Trenching in the right of way gets complicated,” Stults said of the digging required for such a project. “And then what tends to happen is people park in a spot and don’t move.”

Ann Arbor is one of many cities confronting a vast challenge as Democrats pin their hopes to reduce U.S. emissions on the rapid, widespread adoption of electric vehicles: How do you get power to people who park on the street?

You’re correct, but only applies to the wealthy. For 90% of the masses, it’s a non starter.

Just plug the car into the USB outlet in the car........oh wait, that might not work.

The answer is hand cranked generators. That will burn the calories off fat people. Drive an hour and crank for 3 hrs.

It will be the prefect guberment control system. Want to control mobility? Cut off the power.

I plan to get an EV next year. My wife and I will still have a gas car too, because gas cars have strengths and EV's have strengths.

But I'll consume less electricity from the grid than I did as recently as a year ago. Why? Because I installed a large solar system onto my house.

That's the only way green energy works: decentralized. When the federal government or state governments try to force it onto us, it fails miserably. But if you do it on your own (or hire a professional to do it), you can tailor it for your specific consumption habits and not try to force a square peg into a round hole like what always happens when government leaders do their one-size-fits-all failures. That's the only reason my solar system will pay for itself in about 13-14 years. (Assuming modest inflation for the power rates as well as the natural gas rate I now avoid with an all electric house and the gasoline price I'll avoid some of with an EV.) If energy prices spike much higher than a respectful 3%-ish inflation rate, it'll pay for itself a lot sooner.

But even then it only works well if you're in an ideal situation (i.e. in the south with lots of sun, a metal roof, part of the roof facing south, no trees shading the roof or dropping sap onto the solar panels, etc.). And even with that it'll never be a 100% weaning off of fossil fuels. Right now I produce a little over 2/3rds of the power I consume. To get that other 1/3rd would be cost prohibitive. If I put an EV onto my load and drive it about 200 miles per week for my normal commute to work and church, my solar would provide a little over half of my power consumed.

But that's with me living in an ideal situation for solar, and with me doing my homework to make it custom for my needs, and with me defining success as it paying for itself in time and removing my budget halfway away from people like Biden making energy costs skyrocket. If you're not going to go through that kind of trouble then green energy isn't for you. If you define successful green energy as being completely off of fossil fuels you might as well believe in the Sooners' defense or other fairy tales. And when the governments force the utilities to go green, they always do it as a total removal from fossil fuels. That's why it fails at the utility level.

Green energy is like everything else: the Dims destroy everything they touch.

There aren’t enough people in my industry now, and tons of them are old double dipping retiree contractors.

Yeah, a friend of mine is doing just that. Loves his job and wants to work into his 70s, but no one lives forever.

Something tells me that SJWs who are addicted to social media won’t do well in jobs that require actual knowledge & skill.

How the hell are they going to generate all this electricity?

Home charging stations that usecsolar is the perfect off the grid vehicle.

….. i want to read an explanation of the physics and math involved in your comment. If solar was 100% efficient, then perhaps you could make a vehicle crawl constantly with a clear sunny day, but at some point, it will take more energy to move the net battery storage than the vehicle.

Radio controlled battery operated drones and cars don’t really have a useful range to carry people.

“ But the power grid is already buckling on hot days. How will people react when they are told to unplug their cars?”

I believe California has already begun doing that.

Also, 15,000.00 will buy a lot of gas.

Not under Biden.

The mileage numbers are bogus as well. Do they take into account traffic on the 5 or the LIE at rush hours. You may go two miles in 15 minutes. You can’t turn the motor off to save the charge.
But the end game here is ending car ownership. With self driving cars you will make an appt and a self driving car will arrive programmed to your business that day and nothing more. It returns to its center after it drpos you at destination. No more indiviuality. No more Liberty.

Sounds like you’ve done the homework. Most of those solar arrays you see on rooftops around here do not directly power the house. It’s fed into the grid and the utility “pays” the owner for the power in the form of lower electric bills. Figuring the ROI on that is really tricky.

The only kind I would consider would be an arrangement like yours. Any electricity produced would go directly to our house.

Liberals never acknowledge or understand the Law of Unintended Consequences.

Because they think with their feelings. if it feels like the right to do, then there MUST be a way of doing it. But don’t count on them to work out the practical details.

Population reduction and reduced mobility for the remaining sub-elites. That is the name of the game.

People will not longer need garages cuz and EV will burn it down.

Of course, daughter and hubby's garage has no room for a car anyways. LOL
