An ancient human ancestor whose name honours Cecil Rhodes should be renamed in an effort to decolonise science, experts have argued.
The species homo rhodesiensis, named after Rhodesia – which in turn took the name of the British imperialist – should be called homo bodoensis, scientists say.
The reclassification is partly a bid to shed colonial associations – as well bring clarity to a confusing chapter of human evolution....
...Rhodes was an imperialist, businessman and politician who played a dominant role in southern Africa in the late 19th century, driving the annexation of vast swathes of land.
The long-running Rhodes Must Fall campaign at Oxford University has demanded the removal of his statue at Oriel College....

I’m surprised someone hasn’t demanded the dog breed, Rhodesian Ridgeback, be forced to have a name change.
Western science was never “colonized”. It was started by WHITE MEN.
Just about all the key thinkers were WHITE MEN.
Just about all the big discoveries and almost all the key inventions were by WHITE MEN.....from Aristotle to the Internet. WHITE MEN. All of them.
Therefore naming anything in Western science after anything but WHITE MEN would be the colonization - not the reverse.
What about Rhodes scholarships?
I believe Clinton was one?
Maybe Zimbabwe scholars or Mugabe scholars?
That will happen. The AKC has been renaming dog breeds for years, usually by adopting a name taken from the native language where the breed was allegedly developed. i.e. Russian Wolfhound became ‘Borzoi’. Therefore, the Rhodesian Ridgeback will get a new exotic sounding name from a south African regional dialect.
Al Gore invented the internet. Right? Right?
(at least he said so...)
Newly named human species may be the direct ancestor of modern humans
And I thought the lumpers vs splitters crap was bad...
Good gad.
annexation of vast swathes of land.
Shouldn’t that be,

/just trying to make a funny
What wrong with colonization?

Quibble, there's no such thing as an Indirect Ancestor -- either someone is your ancestor, or they're not. Period.
Since the scientific method was largely developed by evil, western, colonizing nations, they have their work cut out for them.
