The prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set had been used by crew members offsite for fun, a new report claims.
The gun, which was fired by Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie “Rust,” may have even been loaded with live rounds when it was used for what was essentially target practice, TMZ reported.
Multiple sources connected to the production of the film told TMZ that the gun was fired at off-the-clock gatherings – which could explain how a live round found its way into the gun’s chamber.
Another source who was on set told the outlet that when cops arrived they found live ammo and blank rounds stored in the same area, where the fatal mix-up could have occurred.

I have seen replica firearms that will only chamber blanks but makes sense that for a western they are probably using real life old colt firearms snd suck. I’m a retired tanker so I’m all about weapons safety. I’ve investigated too many close calls even on the range where we had a three step clearance I saw one live round in the chamber get by. Lucky no one was killed on that one.
Can’t imagine the safety precautions for the Rifleman. They were always shooting off rounds.

Apparently $7 million doesn’t get you much these day. For $7 mill they should have been able to hire professionsal.
I am shocked that the prop guns are not controlled and store in gun prop cases until use, handed to the actor directly just before use and retrieved and put back into the gun prop case after the scene is completed. The idea that a prop gun can even fire a real bullet also blows my mine.
Lastly, seeing the picture of Alec afterwards in what is presumably his costume from the production, he does not look like an “old west outlaw from the 1880s.
It is also another hollywood movie appropriating 1880s Kansas by filming it in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If you are going to do a film about Kansas, shoot the damm thing in Kansas. Same goes for Maine! Don’t shoot you Maine set films in North Carolina.
Other than sleep, I’d bet the rent that the only other activity Baldwin has been doing the last few days is conference calling with lawyers.
Wow. I forgot to edit. A prop gun should not be capable of firing a projectile. It might even if not used in an actual shooting scene be made of other material and totally unusable.
The fact that real guns are used is what makes safety protocols so damn important. Especially the rule about live ammo being verboten.

No, these have machined brass cartridges that take decent-size (and power) caps to cycle the action like a real firearm. I think their importation into the US was restricted back in the 1980s but they seem to be reasonably available on sites like eBay and GunBroker.
She is in charge of storing the guns & ammunition and keeping them locked up when not in use, then loading & checking them before they ever get to the actor.
One episode addressed the accidental fatal shooting of one of Mark’s friends.
The Joshua Trees in some episodes of “Gunsmoke” are a bit disconcerting.
