VANITY: Are We On The Verge of Serous Long-Term Grocery Shortages?

Posted on 10/17/2021 1:37:33 PM PDT by Jeff Chandler

Mrs. Chandler received a panicky email from her conspiracy-minded friend. Her friend said that Fox News told her we are going to experience devastating supermarket shortages lasting for two years.

I suspect that this could be Fox News creating fear to attract viewers.

I am now being pressured to purchase a crapload of non-perishables.

Tourists may be somewhat responsible for the recent shelf cleaning but it was entirely the work of all my good responsible small town neighbors in March ‘20.

One can never go wrong prepping for the future. I say go buy what you need now before the panic buying starts in earnest.

Nothing to worry about if you don’t need to buy anything...

There is not much in the way of caned goods or for that matter anything I buy at a grocery store that comes off a boat.

Fertilizer is going up in price because natural gas is going up in price.

Prebought 28% for next year and by the end of the day it went up $100/T.

“There are holes on the shelf. Used to be only time there were holes on the shelf was when there was a major sale.” Bring index cards and/or duct tape with this printed in permanent marker: DEMOCRAT VOTERS BUILT THIS! and stick them on the empty shelves.

Good idea--A variation on that theme might be:

"This empty space brought to you by Joe Biden". ;-)

LOL! True! But funny. You can’t have roaming gangs (like Antifa) until there are shortages of essentials. Obviously CA is attempting to promote this, based on the trucking info above. The jab mandates are doing the same thing. The rats ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

You mean like a vaccine mandate?

Funny. We were giving our old dog, who has since died, pumpkin for his digestion. We have at least 2 cases of canned pumpkin, about 50 cans; a pumpkin shortage won’t affect us. Nor will the pasta shortage. We’re well stocked with that. I will stock up on flour, though. I can make pasta, bread, won ton wrappers, and all kinds of stuff with it. As for beef, our local butcher raises his own beef; hasn’t raised his prices for years, no matter what the prices are anywhere else.

My son works at a food city meat department. All their supply trucks are arriving short loaded. The head of the department is telling them tell family the suppliers are saying we should be all right but buy and freeze your turkeys if you can find them now. He said some items they have been unable to get restocked period.

My wife’s coworker’s husband works at a Walmart distribution center and says none of the Walmart’s in their district have been fully stocked all summer and it’s getting worse. They were working four ten hour days and now have just shifted to five ten hour days. If a worker shows up Monday-Friday and works a full ten hour day Walmart has started paying them an extra $50 on top of their regular hourly pay. If they work a full ten hours on a Saturday they paid regular pay, any overtime due plus a $250 for the ten hours.

Walmart Nationwide has placed concrete-filled steel posts at All of their entrances at All of their stores in the past few years. Walmart has provided “shoppers” that bring your food choices outside the store to your auto. When times get tough, and they will, People will not be allowed to enter the store to steal all they can. And they will find it really hard to enter even with a 350 diesel pickup when they contact 3
“ concrete-filled pipes with their radiators. - Call me crazy but I think someone in Bentonville has a sharp pencil and can see a few years down the road.

Mr. GG2 who is friendly with the manager at Ali’s was told last week that things are going to get bad. He said that they are being trained for handling customers when the outages start.

If you can't see what's coming at this point...well.

Yes, there are shortages that continue to grow and are NOT short term. But hey...don't worry about it.

I would suggest you better understand the grocery supply chain and the sourcing for foods, and their ingredients. Then look at wheat and corn prices and better understand the impact on farming.

Personal shoppers are not employed by Wal-mart but by 3rd parties like Instacart.
