But in an interview with the BBC Radio program “Kermode and Mayo,” Michael Caine revealed that he likely won’t be taking on any more roles. He’s 88 years old, after all, and he said not many films look to cast an 88-year-old lead. Caine also gave a few other reasons for retiring from acting, including health problems and focusing on writing.
“Funnily enough, it has turned out to be what is my last part really,” Caine said about”Best Sellers,” his latest film. “Because I haven’t worked for two years, and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can’t walk very well.
“And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful. So I’m now not an actor, I’m a writer,” Michael Caine continued. “Which is lovely, because as an actor you have to get up at half-past six in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you start writing without leaving the bed!”
When the interviewer confirmed that Caine was saying this would be his “last picture,” he said, “I think it would be, yeah. There haven’t been any offers honestly for two years, because nobody’s been making any movies I wanna do. Also, you know I’m 88. There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man that’s 88, you know?”

His first film was Zulu, for the trivia buffs out there.
He and Maggie Smith were so charming and funny in “California Suite.” I also liked “Sleuth.”
Always the British officer fighting Zulu warriors.
Happy retirement, sir!
That is such a great movie and he is excellent in it.
I didn’t like “The Island” until the last 10 minutes. Then I thought, ‘hey - that’s pretty cool.’
In one of his interviews, he said he took nearly any part offered to him. When asked why, he said one must practice his craft even if it is in a bit part.
And let's not forget Clint Eastwood, still making decent movies at 91.
“The Man Who Would Be King” with Sean Connery.
A master at his trade....with some great stories about people he worked with. I’ll bet a bio would be well worth the read.
I remember seeing ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ as a teen and thinking it was one of the funniest movies I’d ever seen. Caine was a great talent.
He’s creepy, imo.
Or the rarely mentioned Harry Palmer series
Yes! He played a cross dressing killer in Brain DePalma’s “Dressed To Kill”.
Sleuth was great. So was The Italian Job (the real one, not the crap remake).
Great movie. Love DePalma.
He’s entitled. Too bad Clint Eastwood couldn’t hire him to join him in a buddy flick about two 90-year olds.
Among the things that are great about Michael Caine is that he always happy to let us know he’d do a crap movie for a handsome paycheck (anyone ever see The Poseidon Adventure II? If not, lucky you). “No, I haven’t seen the film... but I’ve seen the lovely house it bought me.”
He and Steve Martin had brilliant chemistry in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a favorite of mine.
