How highly processed foods harm memory in the aging brain (Omega-3 fat reversed high carb diet brain effects)

Four weeks on a diet of highly processed food led to a strong inflammatory response in the brains of aging rats that was accompanied by behavioral signs of memory loss, a new study has found.

Researchers also found that supplementing the processed diet with the omega-3 fatty acid DHA prevented memory problems and reduced the inflammatory effects almost entirely in older rats.

Neuroinflammation and cognitive problems were not detected in young adult rats that ate the processed diet.

The study diet mimicked ready-to-eat human foods that are often packaged for long shelf lives, such as potato chips and other snacks, frozen entrees like pasta dishes and pizzas, and deli meats containing preservatives.

Activation of genes linked to a powerful pro-inflammatory protein and other markers of inflammation was significantly elevated in the hippocampus and amygdala of the older rats that ate the processed diet alone compared to young rats on any diet and aged rats that ate the DHA-supplemented processed food.

The older rats on the processed diet also showed signs of memory loss in behavioral experiments that weren't evident in the young rats. They forgot having spent time in an unfamiliar space within a few days, a sign of problems with contextual memory in the hippocampus, and did not display anticipatory fear behavior to a danger cue, which suggested there were abnormalities in the amygdala.

"The amygdala in humans has been implicated in memories associated with emotional -- fear and anxiety-producing -- events. If this region of the brain is dysfunctional, cues that predict danger may be missed and could lead to bad decisions," Barrientos said.

The results also showed that DHA supplementation of the processed-food diets consumed by the older rats effectively prevented the elevated inflammatory response in the brain as well as behavioral signs of memory loss.

Yep, been doing the paleo thing, eating fresh veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, shellfish, certain fish and only lean meat.

Only cook with olive oil, usually in air fryer, no rice, white flour, pasta dishes of any kind. No sweets.

Between that and keto lost 80lbs this year, never felt better.

"Been taking a fish oil supplement for years, and I recommend the same to anyone."

I have also been taking fish oil supplements for years, but recently I have become aware of some possible problems concerning high levels of fish oil and atrial fibrillation. I strongly suggest that you search the terms fish oil and AFIB. I have cut down my dosage to one triple strength pill four times a week.

The Standard American Diet of processed high glycemic carbs is genocidal.

Big Food & Big Pharma are genocidal.

Break away while you still can.

Wow..didnt know that. I have had seafood poisoning which can be one of the worst...and charcoal almost immediately stops it. Takes longer if you wait. So first sign i take some

Use it on my dog too

Have no clue why it would have stopped this bone or muscle pain. Perhaps anti inflammatory effect

Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds was my go to cereal but after several years, I got sick of it. Breakfast is normally 1-2 eggs and a small hunk of meat now. We've got a laying hen and I'm the only one who eats eggs for the most part. I don't even feed the thing and she still lays an egg every day. Wish I could clone it. Someone gave is a dozen high dollar eggs, brown, pasture raised, fancy box, certified humane, probably $6/dozen or more. Fried one up with one of our hen's eggs and hers still had a darker yolk.

Here's that cereal's label;

Loaded with nutrients, 40%, 80%, 100% of RDA but most are added. It's like taking a multivitamin. I have my doubts as to whether its as good as getting them from real food.

Wow, 80 pounds! Kudos to you! Well done. That is very impressive. You must feel so much better.

I lost 20 two years ago and absolutely swore I wouldn’t let it creep back on, but it did. Sigh. All that hard work gone.

I discovered "Nuthouse Granola" maybe ten years ago at our local fruit stand. It is a wonderful mix of dried fruits, nuts, and grains. Expensive, but really worth it! It comes and goes from stores, so I now buy it on Amazon. I never noticed the "Rosemary extract for freshness" until just now.

Carbs are the debbil

Half a cup of oatmeal with plain nonfat Greek yougurt or a shroom omelette with baby spinach for break fast. Fills me up till noon...

No cravings, no hunger, eat smaller fresh food meals 3 more times a day.

Of course no sodas, no sugar added anything, carbs baby.

Its a lifestyle change, not a diet.

Fresh foods cost more, so factor that in, the good news I can still get a couple pounds of non GMO chicken tenderloins for under $4.

“It is a miracle cure for food poisoning”

Yes it is!!!!!

My granddaughter when 2 yrs. old got ahold of a bottle of Eucalyptus oil and drank some of it. Poison control said to get her to the ER within 20 min. or she would go into a coma and die. They notified the ER and they were all prepared to put that tube down her throat and pump the Charcoal in and back out of her stomach. Let me tell you that whole ER smelled of Eucalyptus.

I make frequent posts about this because it truly helps. Also if you have a dog who eats something it shouldnt and you dont want to force her to vomit.

My dog gets to anything i drop on the floor before i can snatch it.

I am naïve when it comes to the use of charcoal other then when used in stomaching pumping.

How does one use charcoal on their own and where do you get it? Is it just a piece of regular charcoal one buys to heat their home and you chew a piece of it?

My favorite snack cakes were Ding Dongs, using their old, trans-fat recipe.

Never ate them much, but when I did, I was a happy boy.

I think there are things you can do in a pinch but dont recommend it. Buy it in a store. Sometimes hard to find. Look in the digestive section. Not all stores carry it.

I used to buy a version that was a pretty small dose at walmart but now i buy it from penn herbs.

Be careful about your presription meds because it will absorp them.
