Mexico: Profeco warns that it could ban Maruchan-type soups
The Entrepreneur ^ | October 2, 2021 | Staff

The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office ( Profeco ) announced this Friday that it could withdraw from the market some of the instant soup brands that exist in Mexico because they have a low nutritional contribution and, on the contrary, are highly caloric (they contribute between 270 to 334 kilocalories per serving ) and contain excess sodium.

The Profeco Consumer Magazine announced that in its next issue it will publish the result of the quality study it carried out on 33 brands. At the moment it is still unknown which are the soups whose sale will be prohibited, but these products are incredibly popular since for many young students or professionals they represent an inexpensive and fast alternative to food.

If they’re so obsessed with the health of the little people then ban cigarettes and alcohol.
Ramen is just low hanging fruit that won’t put up a fight.

The social busybodies you read about.

You can take a package of ramen, and add shrimp, egg, sliced beef, sliced green onions, hot sauce, cayenne pepper, imitation crab meat or just about anything you can think of and make it a cheap and healthy meal.

These folks are insane.

Back in college, I can buy 4 Maruchan soups for dinner. It’s for broke people and all you need is hot water. If the reason was for “nutritional value” then get rid of chips, burgers, sodas etc. Another lefty moron with nothing else to do.

Yeah, another alternative is keeping a container of dehydrated veggies in the cabinet. Most grocery stores carry them in the spice section. Diced onion, celery, parsley, carrots, tomatoes, etc. Makes for a great soup add-in for ramen noodles and those instant Lipton chicken soup in a cup bases. Quick and easy, great on a cold, rainy or snowy day. Add a little extra low sodium bouillon, and it’s like your mama just made it. Yum.

= = =

If you are careful, you can carefully open the top of the package and add hot water from the faucet in your cell.

Wait a bit for your delightful snack.

Soon Mexicans will be claiming asylum four soups.

Gotta confess. Every once in a while I get a craving for those and will dress up 15 cents worth of packaged chemicals with veggies, an egg, and hot sauce.

If you’re on lock down you can have the trustee get hot water and pour it through the gap in the door using a piece of paper from your file as a funnel. Jail cell water in never hot enough. You have to get it from the day room microwave.

Not that I would know

I worked in pretty pricey restaurant when I was younger. The hospitality business is predominately Mexicans and others from Latin America. We could have our shift meal as anything within reason and I ate like a king. The Mexicans sat by themselves and ate these packets of junk. They also could easily drink me under the table after work.

Indeed.

Or skip the noodles altogether.

Chicken broth from a can or bouillon. Drop in a scrambled egg or two. Let cook in the broth while stirring. Add parmesan cheese if desired. Instant Italian stracciatella soup. Or Chinese egg drop soup, whatever you want to call it. Add whatever else you like.

Broke College Students And Fixed-Income Seniors Deeply Saddened? ;)

You can REALLY jazz up Ramen Noodles in so many ways to make them more nutritious. There are entire COOKBOOKS dedicated to this!

Also - don’t want all that sodium? Don’t use the whole packet of ‘flavor.’ A little goes a long way!
