An Illinois man died this month in the state's first human case of rabies since 1954, according to health officials on Tuesday.
The Lake County man, in his 80s, awoke in mid-August to find a bat on his neck...
The bat was captured and tested positive for rabies, but when health officials told the man he needed to start post-exposure rabies treatment, he declined, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) said...
He subsequently died and a bat colony was found in his home.

Very true - all joking aside, bats can carry a lot of nasty stuff along with them, and they need to be respected for that.

Brown bats I assume, and they are the major carrier of rabies.
Get them out of your attic. If you see any animal acting strangely, or find an animal carcass where you wouldn’t expect, or anything even trivially suspicious, call animal control people. Even a negative test could be useful data.
If there is any legitimate reason for any government agency to exist anywhere, it’s to control this disease.
Nobody survives it.

Years ago, this meant 26 shots,but now usually you give antibodies and then a 3 shot series of the vaccine.
We have a lot of rabies here in the Philippines because of stray dogs and not everyone gets their dogs a rabies vaccine...even though they have free clinics once or twice a year.
Now with covid causing unemployment, we have a lot of stray dogs whose owners can't afford to feed them. The mayor has free rabies shots for the very poor at the city clinic but they run out of vaccine sometimes, and so about once a month we have our less indigent neighbors asking for help paying for the shots which come to 25 dollars for 3 shots.
Why would someone refuse rabies treatment?

The predators and wild animals are out in abundance this past year.

I occasionally have a bat in my house, and one bit my grandson.
He (grandson) got a lot of shots.
It’s not fun. All of us US Embassy kids in Islamabad had to get the old 14-shots-in-the-stomach series when a new puppy we played with died of rabies. I still get memories whenever I smell rubbing alcohol.
Once while jogging at 5am I was chased by a rabid racoon. Foam around the mouth and running crazily. I hopped on an SUV. It swayed back and forth looking at me for about a minute then took off. I ran top speed back home. Good workout!
And a lot of people lost jobs in shops and restaurants, and a lot working overseas were fired and came home. So 25 dollars is a lot. And severe bites require antibody shot which is 20 dollars, plus ten dollars for antibiotics.
But it is a lot cheaper than in the past...
1. Deadly virus coming from bats, or something like that.
2. Everyone must wear masks.
3. Lockdown!
4. Mandatory vaccines against rabies.
5. No more freedoms.
