Rolls-Royce (OTCPK:RYCEY, OTCPK:RYCEF) is awarded a contract to provide upgraded engines for the U.S. Air Force's B-52 bomber fleet in an award that could grow to $2.6B, the Department of Defense announces, beating out General Electric (NYSE:GE) and incumbent Pratt & Whitney (NYSE:RTX).

Rolls-Royce was given an initial six-year $501M base contract to supply 608 engines for installation on the Air Force's 76 active-duty and reserve B-52s, which could grow to $2.6B if all options are exercised

8 engines per plane, you do the math.

I am hoping they replace the current 8 with 4 bigger ones.

EXACTLY - that’s the problem with DOD, the IDIOTS there buy 8 engines for each plane. What’s their plan for the other 6 engines?

I, for one, am hoping they install the other 6 engines on the aircraft.

Heh, heh...Nice retort, Bob. Well done.

Maybe they can tow the extra six engines in a glider as spare parts.

When I worked in a shipyard Rolls Royce tech reps came in frequently to help us work on the Rolls Royce systems on the vessels. I would always ask them if they could get me a discount on one of their cars. In 20 years not one person, except me, thought that was funny, but I still did until the day I retired.

I say one engine for one plane.

My car only needs one engine.

For crying out loud, give em a V-8 if they need more power.

And Rolls Royce engines?

What’s the matter with a good old Chevy engine.

They probably want grey poupon mustard on their sammiches, too.

Are they STILL going to put eight engines on each plane?
(maybe I should read the article?)

Nah, don't bother reading the article. Yes, they decided to replace the 8 P&W TF33s with 8 new engines of a similar thrust, rather than replace them with four larger engines with greater thrust and a bit more fuel economy.

The Air Force determined that replacing the 8 engines with 8 new engines would require a lot less stress analysis of the wing/pylon system than certifying a new pylon design that would be necessary for housing a larger turbofan.

All of the engines in the competition are small turbofan engines that are normally used on business jets.

The B52 has eight engines per plane four groups of two each. There was a plan to reengine the plane with 4 modern high bypass fans 40% more range.

Really? They rejected TWO American firms and gave the contract to the Brits?? What the heck?

From the fine article:

The Pentagon says the work will be performed at the Rolls-Royce facility in Indianapolis, where the company says it has invested more than $600M in advanced manufacturing and technology.

Built on American soil by Americans (or foreigners with H-1B visas...)

How many wings does it have?

Does it have 8 wings?

Maybe it needs less engines and more wings.

Think of how many spark plugs they’ll need.

8 engines with 8 spark plugs………that’s like more spark plugs than they got down at the filling station.

That’s 304 engines for a four engine system. One on the plane, and one spare for each position.
