Correct. I wonder how much pressure was exerted on the Navy to get them to agree touse F35s.

They need to retool and build new airframes. The ones we have probably weigh twice as much as they are supposed to because of all the stop-drills and pop-rivet plates.

I am hoping they replace the current 8 with 4 bigger ones.

Problems with yaw control and flight dynamics with a four engine configuration and one engine out. Air Force had to keep the eight engine configuration.

That top photo is interesting not only for the engines, but the two gatling gun pods at the front of the fuselage. Was it being considered as a replacement for the A-10?

(just kidding)

Those are video cameras for the Electro-Optical Viewing System (EVS.) One is an IR camera, and the other is a low light TV camera. They're for navigation and low level penetration.

And that none of these guys can win a war?

Sure they can!

They just won a war in Afghanistan.

Only a quibbler would point out they won it for the Taliban.

A win's a win!

LOL - Great one Null....

Nice historical synopsis. I was over there during Desert Storm; vaguely remember hearing about them being “in-theater” but never saw one. Did get to see a couple British Tornado jets that took AA rocket hits (both right engine loss).

In DESERT STORM, the B-52s flew mostly at night and above 40,000 ft MSL. Difficult to see them from the ground, under those conditions.
