Fearing battery fires after recalls, people are selling their Chevy Bolt EVs back to GM

(CNN)After Bart Schoenfeld's Chevrolet Bolt EV was recalled for the second time, he'd had enough.

GM had warned that some of the cars could have a manufacturing defect that might cause them to catch fire. For safety's sake, the automaker recommended Bolt owners restrict their use of the car to avoid straining the batteries, and park them away from their homes....

...In a process that took weeks to finally work out, Schoenfeld sold his Chevrolet Bolt EV back to GM for a price that was at about $10,000 more than he would have gotten simply by trading the car in to a dealer, he said, though he declined to provide specific numbers. It's a solution that many Bolt owners are resorting to, according to numerous social media reports and CNN Business interviews. GM would not say how many vehicles it has..

Sensors have batteries. Toyota sensors are about $500 each on Amazon. Tire shop $20 or so each to replace them. Or go the PVC pipe fix. Just remember the batteries will go dead after a time.

Or continue to ignore it. ;-)

A poorly-made Lithium battery pack is a poorly-made Lithium battery pack regardless of whether it is on a full electric, or hybrid.

It doesn't matter if the battery is well made or poorly made. When the barrier between the anode and cathode in the battery is breeched in a crash the battery contents turn into plasma in milliseconds. There's a lot of stored energy that is released almost instantaneously. Lithium fires are next to impossible to put out. There was a wreck involving a Tesla in Texas about a month ago. It burned uncontrollably for over 4 hours. Both people in the car were roasted alive. National media is keeping quiet about this growing trend. You have to search local media to find the stories, but it's happening all over with EV's using lithium batteries. I won't even sit in one, much less ride in one. Lithium powered EV's make Ford Pinto's look like a safe car.

Interesting. Makes sense. Looks like they are using the hall effect sensor for other things like traction control.

There is a house in my tract that has an electric car. I have noticed they are now charging it outside the garage.

So, how much green house gases are released when a zero emission electric car catches fire?

Then heaven forbid that you ever drive a vehicle with 20 gallons of a very flammable liquid contained in nothing but a plastic tank. One puncture of that tank, and all of that flammable and highly volatile liquid gushes out all over the ground under your vehicle.

Wife had the same problem with her Prius. It was still on when we gave the car to one of our kids and her husband. The big battery eventually started going bad in it and the light was still on when they got minimal trade-in on their next car. Still...it was a GREAT little car, very decent gas mileage. I noticed our local BJs Warehouse did sensor replacements for half what Toyota charges. Why do cars have to be so complicated?

The batteries are a heckuva lot easier to replace by disassembling the pipe section than they are by demounting your tires.

Do you own an EV?

Nope. But I'm not against the concept of EVs. I'm only against government subsidies of EVs.

What to do if driving and the car catches on fire?
Nothing, a battery fire is instant and you die.
