A perspective article challenges the 'energy balance model,' which says weight gain occurs because individuals consume more energy than they expend.
According to the authors, 'conceptualizing obesity as a disorder of energy balance restates a principle of physics without considering the biological mechanisms underlying weight gain.' The authors argue for the 'carbohydrate insulin model,' which explains obesity as a metabolic disorder driven by what we eat, rather than how much.
* Public health messaging exhorting people to eat less and exercise more has failed to stem rising rates of obesity and obesity-related diseases.
* The energy balance model, which says weight gain is caused by consuming more energy than we expend, "restates a principle of physics without considering the biological mechanisms driving weight gain."
* The carbohydrate-insulin model makes a bold claim: overeating doesn't cause obesity; the process of getting fat causes overeating.
* The current obesity epidemic is due, in part, to hormonal responses to changes in food quality: in particular, high-glycemic load foods, which fundamentally change metabolism.
* Focusing on what we eat rather than how much we eat is a better strategy for weight management.
While the carbohydrate-insulin model is not new -- its origins date to the early 1900s -- The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition perspective is the most comprehensive formulation of this model to date, authored by a team of 17 internationally recognized scientists, clinical researchers, and public health experts. Collectively, they have summarized the growing body of evidence in support of the carbohydrate-insulin model.

I can say this approach turns off your appetite while practically never feeling hungry.
I think it was socratese that said man could live on just one meal a day- (I’ve only ever eaten 2 meals- a brunch, and dinner- no snacks- I’ve stayed the same weight for all my adult life- only fluctuating about 15 lbs in either direction all these years- Even though i drank like 6-8 sodas a day- how I’m still alive i have no idea lol)
Trigglypuff is gloating! “See Mom? I TOLD you it wasn’t the 3 dozen cream filled twinkies I ‘make disappear’ every week!”
You hit the nail smack dab on the head.
A vast majority of fatsos are obese because they eat too much and sit on their blubber butts all day.
Do you have diabetes?
There are a lot of things that can modulate metabolism. That said, in the end it is and has always been about balancing the calories you consume with the calories you burn. If your burn rate is slow, then you have to consume less calories and do whatever you can to increase your burn rate. It’s truly that fundamental.
nope- i don’t understand it- I did cut down to 2 sodas a day though- i had a fast metabolism- don’t know if that helped or not-
Horseshit. More BS from those who need to justify their budgets and qualify their grants.
Not so long ago I had ‘thought’ I’d become healthy, having gone down a road which opened my eyes. I was working, active, exercising and things were stable.
One day - WITHOUT ANY CHANGE IN ACTIVITY, DIET OR HEALTH - I began literally gaining 5-6 pounds a week. That’s almost A POUND A DAY.
There’s no question that the quality of foods for most people is crap: Look at the belt in front AND behind you at the checkout. It’s sickening, literally.
Long story short, “what” I was eating had zero impact on my weight gain. “How much” was a component, but not panacea.
For many, it’s literally “how much”, and for some it’s literally “what”, but it’s a LOT more complicated than that.
This was validated in hundreds of hours of meetings with others as I was doing research and outreach. Frankly, there’s a significant segment of the population desperately seeking solutions to health problems that are not so simply resolved by these ‘scientists’ or, for that matter, doctors.
I hope to publish next year...if I can stop getting distracted.
I’m glad you’re okay. Your fast metabolism probably didn’t hurt. You’ll probably live to a ripe old age.
Genetics is also important.
I just lost 60 lbs in 5 months on Keto/Paleo/Med regime
Cut out all processed food and almost all carbs, no rice, flour, pasta, potatoes, etc. Never skip meals, portion control, 4 smaller meals, cut out snacks.
Lean meats, fish, shellfish, lots of veg, eggs, fruits, nuts, berries.
Never get hungry or cravings, lots of nonfat Greek yogurt
Works for me, a new member of the Air Fryer master race, lol
Thank you. I have always struggled, but this past year has been horrendous. Was put on two meds which I think have turned my already slow metabolism down several notches. I barely have enough energy to drag myself to my sit down job and back home again. I don’t eat snacks, drink soda or alcohol and not a lot of sugar
To those who assume with disdain that everyone who is overweight sits around all day eating junk 24/7 I pray you never have to trudge a mile in my stretch pants.
thanks, yeah- my family is long lived, into 90’s mostly, so good genes there-
Please give us a heads up and reference this thread. Godspeed
I’ll do my best. I did bookmark the thread.
Only morons believe in the energy balance model. Its all part of the lie of the “calorie”.
Yep. They would have us believe 100 calories of Oreo cookies is the same as 100 calories of rib steak.
bump for reference
>> overeating is not the primary cause of obesity
LOL, well it’s the material cause. So there’s that...
>> suddenly, I gained a pound a day...
Not to be rude, but starvation would certainly result in weight loss.
