Bosses turn to ‘tattleware’ to keep tabs on employees working from home
The Guardian ^ | 5 Sept 2021 | Sandy Milne

... first week of remote work, David and his team were introduced to a digital surveillance platform called Sneek.

Every minute or so, the program would capture a live photo of David and his workmates via their company laptop webcams. The ever-changing headshots were splayed across the wall of a digital conference waiting room that everyone on the team could see. Clicking on a colleague’s face would unilaterally pull them into a video call. If you were lucky enough to catch someone goofing off or picking their nose, you could forward the offending image to a team chat via Sneek’s integration with the messaging platform Slack.

...from screenshotting employees’ screens to logging their keystrokes and tracking their browsing. But in the fast-growing bossware market, each platform potentially brings something new to the table.

But the rise of tattleware changes the game. If an employee uses a spy-enabled, work-sponsored computer outside of hours, their employer could easily access their personal data, down to internet banking passwords and Facebook messages.

Not exactly new, a relative has worked from home for many years and years back they were watching his keystrokes, file access, internet usage... The brave new world.

Everyone knows not to use a company computer for personal stuff.

If you’re curious put some electrical tape over the camera.

They have little lens covers for that too. Don’t let your computer go to sleep is a minimum.

Here’s a helpful little hint from Jeffrey Toobin.

Don’t go jacking off. You never know when you’ll get caught on camera masturbating in front of 100 million people.

The company issued me a webcam with a built in lens cover. I don’t even have to use post-it notes any more.

They do measure productivity - how long you are on a particular screen, how much you process each day. And they even offered an approved set of backgrounds to use on video calls.

If they started pulling this crap, they’d get a lot of nice pictures of the dogs

When I worked that keystroke thing seemed symbolically rotten. Bosses have little to do usually in my experience but the thought of them casually spying was abhorrent to me.

But I first read in a Time or Newsweek in a waiting room in probably 1985 that companies were sending messages to workers on computers during the day saying “The worker next to you is working 14% faster and 5 workers have completed 41% more work today than you.” It has gotten worse.

unless you are doing data entry, i fail to see how many keystrokes an hour is relative to productivity

With a laptop, you can maintain productivity even on the crapper.

Bosses will have to start having audible chants saying “Ramming speed. Ramming speed” if they treat workers like Charlton Heston in a movie.

IMO working remotely is a trap.
Look at the money you are saving, not having to come into work, we can pay less for your position...

Ha.

Always a way for the devious and crafty worker to come out on top.

“Here’s a helpful little hint from Jeffrey Toobin.”

Why? Didn’t hurt him any.

Of course, if you’re not a sociopathic leftist, you would know better than to do that in the first place...

I read recently where that’s a real thing. I cannot remember or recall which companies and corporations were considering it. But in order to cut expenses and have less expensive real estate to occupy, they were offering employees the option to stay working at home if employees agreed to take a cut in pay. From 10% up to maybe 25%

I myself worked from home for 12 months. Even now I go to the office three out of five days. Would I take a 25% pay cut to work at home every day? No. But I would take a 10% cut.

Surreptitiously recording audio or video like this is in some states illegal.

Yes but I suspect corporate legal slips some disclaimers or permissions in the very fine print like when someone logs on.

Jerking off on Zoom is okay, but don’t get a “vaccine” for something >99% survivable, you’re fired.

You put an old phone with a video of yourself in a loop in front of the web cam.
