London — A study conducted in the U.K. offers some of the first large-scale, real-world data on how well vaccination protects people against catching a "breakthrough" COVID-19 infection, and how well it protects breakthrough patients from becoming seriously ill. The results are encouraging.
The peer-reviewed study published Wednesday in The Lancet medical journal will help policy makers and epidemiologists fill in a significant gap in the understanding of the true efficacy of three of the major vaccines being used worldwide....
The data, gathered from December 8, 2020, through July 4, 2021, show that of more than 1.2 million adults who received a first dose, fewer than 0.5% reported contracting breakthrough infections two weeks or more after getting the jab. Among those who got both shots, fewer than 0.2% experienced a breakthrough infection a week or more after getting their second shot.
"Among those who did experience a breakthrough infection, the odds of that infection being asymptomatic increased by 63% after one vaccine dose and by 94% after the second dose," the study's authors wrote in The Lancet....

Small scale real world data this week:
My vaccinated sister-in-law in her mid-50’s with weight comorbidity(and others) has a very mild breakthrough case.
An unvaccinated acquaintance of my wife in his mid-40’s with weight comorbidity died this week.
Would being vaccinated have saved him? Who knows? My guess is yes.
“the purpose and goal of any vaccine is to prevent infection”
no vaccines give 100% protection against infection
take the MMR vaccine kids get: One dose of MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles, 78% effective against mumps, and 97% effective against rubella.
Two doses of MMR vaccine are 97% effective against measles and 88% effective against mumps.
another: measles breakthrough in Sweden

the objective of any vaccine is to prevent serious illness and death. Which these vaccines are doing nicely in those without pre-existing and/or age related issues
leaky immune system in that even “natural immunity” is tricked by escape mechanisms developed by the virus. Even healthy immune systems. The virus mutates in the RBD area, the immune system adjusts, but then it mutates in the N-terminal domain where the immune system may not detect or reach. Or an amino acid changes charge from positive to neutral and throws a curve ball.
no that is NOT what I’m saying.
I’m saying a person gets two vaccinations, and, then has a MILD breakthrough, as almost all are, they should have the advantage of both vaccine acquired AND wild acquired immune response
IF we accept the study that says the wild acquired infection plus ONE shot afterward, is better, than one SHOT alone, AND better two SHOTS no infection.
What you think I said is infection, 2 shots, infection. That is not what I said
I call Bull.
Everyone I know who has received a Covid 19 positive diagnosis, including several who have been admitted to the hospital, in the last month are all fully vaccinated.
The idea that “breakthrough cases are rare” is absurd.
Israel which has the 7th highest vaccination rate in !the world had more reported cases of the Kung flu then it has ever reported before.
Unless the UK has some secret sauce no other nation has this is a dubious result at best.
Must just be coincidence that everyday famous ball players, musicians, politicians , actors, etc all have breakthrough cases.
Do I have to define reinfected for you? Fully vaccinated?
I’m referring to the study that was posted a few days ago that the ‘naturally immune’ were crowing over as proof wild immunity was better than vaccines. IF wild immunity is better, than someone who’s had a double vaccination that then gets a breakthrough is, in effect, getting a booster. :
The authors proposed the following regarding Pfitzer vaccines:
natural infection is better than one shot but wanes over time, which is not defined, but
natural infection with one shot is better than no shot, and
natural infection is better than two shots
T-cell and B-cell interactions may contribute more to immunity than antibody-inducing vaccines alone
When allowing the infection to occur at any time before vaccination (from March 2020 to February 2021), evidence of waning natural immunity by May 20, 2021 was demonstrated but not defined in time
Synopsis of the modeling used by the researchers to come to the above conclusions:
Model 1: natural infection vs 2-shot vaccinated: 16,215 persons each group;
257 cases of infection; 238 breakthrough plus 19 reinfections. zero deaths (1.47% vs 0.12%)
199 symptomatic vaccinated; 8 reinfections (1.2% vs 0.06%)
9 hospitalizations: 8 vaccinated; 1 reinfection
13.06-fold increased risk for breakthrough - caveat: “apart from age 60+” no assessed comorbidities affected risk.
27.02-fold increase in risk for symptomtic - caveat: “apart from age 60+” no covariates were significant
Model 2:uninfected 2-shot versus previously infected: 46,035 persons - zero deaths (1.62% vs 0.23%)
748 cases of infection; 640 breakthrough plus 108 reinfections (1.4% vs 0.23%)
552 symptomatic: 484 vaccinated vs 68 reinfection (1.1% vs 0.15%)
25 hospitalizations: 21 breakthrough; 4 reinfection (0.045%)
5.96-fold increase for breakthrough vs - reinfection - caveat: “apart from SES level and age 60+ that remained significant in this model as well”
Model 3a: uninfected versus 1-shot previously infected 14,029 persons = zero deaths (0.11% vs 0.16%)
0.53-fold decreased risk for 1-shot - based on 20 PCR in 1-shot versus 37 PCR on previously infected.
Given: additional protection for preinfected was gained from a single dose
39 symptomatics: 16 1-shot; 23 previously infected (0.11% vs 0.16%)
1 hospitalization: 1 previously infected
Model 3b: previously infected vs 1-shot previously infected
0.68-fold decreased risk for 1-shot
You aren’t allowed to mention natural immunity! The CDC is still pretending it doesn’t exist.
The published research, OTOH says it is about 80%, which is one of the reasons why severe infection is rare.
But you are right, for the older, at risk crowd a breakthrough infection is the best possible outcome.
It is tragically hilarious that the CDC and vaccine makers and their cheerleaders set themselves up for failure by claiming the vaccines would pretty much eradicate the virus and if you got the vaccine you wouldn’t get sick. Now as it is becoming apparent that was a lie they both claim never to have said that and that there are not many breakthrough infections.
And by consistently lying and raising the bar to a level they can’t possibly ever meet they lurch from failure to failure, from one set of lies to the next, destroying more of their credibility every step of the way. Now even a lot of the vaccinated are coming to the conclusion they were deceived and the pushers are not to be trusted.
Read the methodology.
The study is crap.
First, we are dealing with tiny numbers of people who have had a breakthrough or reinfection. So in saying that vaccination reduces risk for even the prior infected, I think putting that into the context of there being extremely low risk for either group is helpful. Near zero times .5 is still near zero.
Second, I don’t think we know much yet about the natural immunity conferred on the vaccinated by breakthrough infections. Does any natural immunity result? Is it as good as no-vaccine natural immunity? As far as I know, we have no idea, just speculation.
Third, this whole discussion ignores the adverse effects of the vaccines, established or potential.

Oh, but you do support the anti-vaxxer propaganda while you deny the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines.
Your “line of reasoning” is devoid of intelligence.
Following your stupidity, why not take 15 vax shots?
You’ll be super duper immune…
Stay away from decision making.
This is an interesting point and one that was kicked around on Wharton Moneyball a few weeks ago (granted, by statistical gurus, not scientists).
I have 20 employees in my office. We are up to 10 covid infections now, 6 of them were vaxed. 0.2% my a**
Just noticed that every Israeli (188) who died from COVID in August 2021 was at least 50 years old.
Also interesting...
USA population is 35X Israel population.
(Israel August Deaths) 188 X 35 (USA Pop.) = 6,580
For the last four weeks, based on CDC Death Certificates, the COVID August death toll in the USA, adjusted for population, is about 4X higher than Israel.
Big difference.
USA Fully Vaxxed - 53%
Israel Fully Vaxxed - 84.8%
The difference might also be the USA method for choosing cause of death.
If the word COVID appears anywhere on a USA Death Certificate, the Underlying Cause of Death is almost always COVID, no matter what age, no matter what co-morbidities.
Since July 01, the CDC only counts infections for hospitalizations and fatalities.
That makes it impossible to compare data from before July.
The Cleveland Clinic released a study last week that estimated total USA COVID infections at 100 million, including non-symptomatic infections.
Beg to differ:
...how well vaccination protects people against catching a "breakthrough" COVID-19 infection, and how well it protects breakthrough patients from becoming seriously ill. This thread is about 'vaccine' propaganda.
...often they were bedridden before infection, immobile and already requiring nursing care,”
Well, that explains Provincetown and all the other scareporn pushing these shots upon the healthy and, particularly, almost entirely invulnerable children.
Got it. /s
“...the unvaccinated COVID patients we see are young, healthy, working people and their condition deteriorates rapidly,” she said. “Suddenly they’re being put on oxygen or on a respirator.”and
"The bad news, doctors say, is that half of Israel's seriously ill patients who are currently hospitalized were fully vaccinated at least five months ago. Most of them are over 60 years old and have comorbidities. The seriously ill patients who are unvaccinated are mostly young, healthy people whose condition deteriorated quickly."Can't have it both ways, that the 'vaccines' are effective and 'breakthrough infections are rare' (i.e., "low rate") when equally 'rare' are infections among the 'UNvaccinated'.
This “study” is in direct conflict with dozens of other peer-reviewed studies. Which one shall we put our faith and trust into today? ... I know ... none. “Science”, particularly medical “science” has devolved into nothing more than “political science”.
“I’m saying a person gets two vaccinations, and, then has a MILD breakthrough, as almost all are, they should have the advantage of both vaccine acquired AND wild acquired immune response”
So should vaccinated people encourage anti-vaxers to remain unvaccinated so the vaxed can more likely catch the mild form of the virus and thus have stronger immunity?
Or even better, should the vaxed be intentionally infected for the same reason?
