My 16 year old has learning disabilities related to a genetic condition (nf). He took part in a double blind study of NAC over the summer at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital. We don't know if he got the drug or the placebo and we don't know the dosage. But he seemed to improve noticeably when he was doing the study and I am considering getting more NAC for him. Can anyone tell me what a good dosage would be? And what is a good source to buy from?
Also I just saw a comment on FR that NAC was good to tinnitus. My tinnitus which was already bad has worsened since I got covid last December, so I want to try it as well. Any knowledgeable advise would be appreciated.
I’ve been taking a single 600 mg tablet once a day since March of last year.
I have not noticed any change, good or bad re: tinnitus.
I use the “OGF” at robkellermd.com It has other ingredients, vit C, L-Glutamine, Alpha Lipoic Acid. They recommend 6 capsules per day which is 750 mg NAC. It’s expensive but for me, worth it.
One thing I’ve found is its effects are cumulative. That is, if you take it regularly for a while, you can skip, sometimes for months, and keep the benefits. I originally took it because a relative was selling it and noticed after just a few days that my hands, which had been aching in the morning, didn’t anymore. That was what sold me.
I’m not a pill-taker and forget to take it quite often. If my hands start hurting in the morning, it reminds me to start taking again. The original dosage was 3 capsules in the morning and 3 in the evening. They’ve changed it to 6 in the morning. I don’t know what that’s all about.
there are posts floating around on the internet that NAC may be hard to get in the future due to some FDA issue
No idea if true.
You can get it at life extension
https://www.lifeextension.com/vitamins-supplements/item01534/n-acetyl-l-cysteine
One you buy from them they often send you magazines about health issues and supplements.
That is NOT N-A-C/NAC....that link is for A-L-C....different product.
You can buy NAC 1000mg on Amazon
Wrong.
Post that Amazon link, please.
That is the wrong one. It is Doesn’t have the “N” on front of it. Explained in the answer to question #3.
It is totally different, won’t work the same way.
Here is something else to look into that is part of the whole NAC process in your body.
Glutathione.
Medcram has gone into detail on it in several videos.
Early on in Covid a medical resident used it on his hospitalized mother and thought it helped her with Covid.
There is some kind of absorption issue with Glutathione so I bought this last year
https://www.quicksilverscientific.com/all-products/glutathione/
I need to buy some more and try it for the ear ringing.
I was sent to a"specialist" for the ringing in my ears. He said there is no cure for tinnitus and sent me on my way...
NAC sounds like a good start. It won't hurt to try it.
Not the same thing. It has to have the N Acetyl in front of it. It’s N-Acetyl-Cysteine/NAC, not L-Cysteine. I’d try Swanson’s or Life Extension.
The tinnitus board on the internet is a depressing place to go. I have only gone once or twice. They try all kinds of things. You can probably find NAC posts there.
Oh- I bought “NOW Supplements, NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) 1,000 mg, 120 Tablets” on Amazon and it is no longer available.
But available at Walmart.com:
oh yeah..you are right. I was focusing on it having the cysteine word.
I think the Life extension one I posted is the right one.
That’s what we’ve been saying, about NAC....that Amazon pulled it, due to it’s efficacy in treating respiratory ailments, such as china virus....and, per several reports I’ve read, here, the adverse effects of these risky shots.
There were also threads reporting that the FDA is trying to make NAC....a safe and effective supplement that has been around for decades....prescription only.
Can’t have anything effective so readily available :-(
I dont really understand the reality of this idea that NAC is being pulled from the market BUT when you can’t find it on Amazon it does make you wonder what is going on.
THe NAC I have now was bought from Amazon
Jarrow Formulas N-A-C Sustain, Supports Liver and Lung Function, 600 mg, 100 Sustain tabs
but not available now. Is available from Walmart.
PA Engineer liked the Jarrow products so that is what I bought.
Here are a couple of previous threads, on NAC, that may have some good sources for you.....

N-Acetyl Cysteine
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a metabolite of the sulfur-containing amino acid, Cysteine. Cysteine is found in high protein foods, N-Acetyl Cysteine is not. N-Acetyl Cysteine is produced within the human body. Cysteine plays a role in the sulfation cycle, acting as a sulfur donor in phase II detoxification and as a methyl donor in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Cysteine also helps synthesize glutathione, one of the body’s most important natural antioxidants and detoxifiers. N-Acetyl-Cysteine is the acetylated form of L-Cysteine.
N-Acetyl Cysteine increases Glutathione Levels
N-Acetyl Cysteine is rapidly metabolized to intracellular glutathione. Glutathione acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body. Glutathione also detoxifies chemicals into less harmful compounds. N-Acetyl Cysteine also protects the body from acetaminophen toxicity and is used in hospitals for patients with acetaminophen poisoning. It has also been shown to be effective at treating liver failure from other causes as well.
N-Acetyl Cysteine Chelates Heavy Metals
Heavy metals like lead, mercury and arsenic are detoxified and removed from the body by N-Acetyl Cysteine . It also increases the excretion of zinc and other essential minerals when taken over an extended period. It is therefore necessary to supplement zinc, copper and other trace minerals when taking N-Acetyl Cysteine.
N-Acetyl Cysteine and the Immune System
Glutathione is known to aid in the transport of nutrients to lymphocytes and phagocytes, two major classes of immune cells, and to protect cell membranes. While purified glutathione is available as a dietary supplement, absorption is low, and N-Acetyl Cysteine is thought to be a better method of boosting cellular glutathione levels. N-Acetyl Cysteine is being investigated as a treatment for AIDS.
N-Acetyl Cysteine Breaks up Mucus
N-Acetyl Cysteine cleaves disulfide bonds by converting them to two sulfhydryl groups. This action results in the breakup of mucoproteins in lung mucus, reducing their chain lengths and thinning the mucus, improving conditions such as bronchitis and flu. Double-blind research has found that N-Acetyl Cysteine supplements improved symptoms and prevented recurrences in people with chronic bronchitis. N-Acetyl Cysteine at a dosage of 1,200 mg per day helps to prevent Influenza infection, reduces the symptoms of existing Influenza infection and reduces the duration of Influenza infections.
N-Acetyl Cysteine and Cancer
N-Acetyl CysteineN-Acetyl Cysteine has been shown to reduce the proliferation of certain cells lining the colon and may reduce the risk of colon cancer in people with recurrent polyps in the colon. Its action as an antioxidant and a glutathione precursor may also contribute to a protective effect against cancer.
N-Acetyl Cysteine Cautions
When taking N-acetyl cysteine it is recommended that two to three times as much vitamin C be taken at the same time. Failure to do so may result in more harm than good from taking this product because of the prolonged presence of the oxidized form of L-Cysteine. The vitamin C also helps keep the glutathione that is produced from the Cysteine in its reduced form so that it can continue acting as an antioxidant.
N-Acetyl Cysteine Dosage
Typical dosage recommendations are in the range of 250-1500mg of NAC daily for the majority of therapeutic benefits.
N-Acetyl Cysteine Safety
NAC is considered safe for consumption in its therapeutic dosage ranges. Individual reactions may vary and anyone experiencing adverse symptoms while taking N-Acetyl Cysteine should discontinue it. 500 mg to 1500mg works quite well.
Where to Get N-Acetyl Cysteine
Available from Pure Bulk vitamins Roseburg OR 888 280 0050 They are prompt and reliable. There are some other places as well.
And while you are reading this pay attention to the paragraph where it states to always take NAC with two to three times as much vitamin C in order to derive its benefits. This is something most users fail to do and then wonder why it doesn’t work as well.
There are brand name prescription versions (put-ups) of N-Acetyl Cysteine. N-Acetyl Cysteine is metabolized into the amino acid Cysteine and glutathione.
As tablets of NAC or as in nebulized inhalant mist-to reduce build up of mucous in the lungs. See product brand named Mucomyst at:

It is clear the FDA is trying to “push” for the advantages of the Pharma prescription system (which IS part of the agreement made long ago between the Food and Drug Administration. What the FDA does is “regulate” Foods and Drugs.. as being whatever they determine EITHER to be to make regulatory judgements that the law creating the FDA says they have the power to do. Like ANY other fedgov agency.) The Pure Food and Drug Act passed in 1906 was done in the very real need to stop the horrific food industry filthy practice and quack medicine fraud, also created the FDA so for good reasons from that time and since. A very different time in US history. Laudanum was over the counter and many people addicted to many bottles a day (opium) for example... habituated and addicted people very common.
FDA has MANY times overstepped their legal authority for the sake of... frankly legalized graft, and, since the head of the FDA is a political position, just like other agencies-— well the politics devolves from that, and creates what we have today, infiltrated as it is with globalist socialists.
The CDC likewise has taken it upon themselves to police people’s freedoms as being “disease preventing” in the same manner- having NOTHING to do with reality and purposely ignoring Constitutional law and Rights which are not granted to the People by government but are already there and the government may NOT infringe on them.
Maybe the suppliers are running low because people are stocking up. But it isn’t much of a conspiracy if you can buy it at Walmart or dozens of other places.
I do not recommend relying on NAC/HCQ/Quercetin/D/C/Zinc to _prevent_ covid now that there is a proven preventative that works much better.
here is an interesting post. I guess maybe RLS is restless leg syndrome??? Something to watch out for if you take it
