My 16 year old has learning disabilities related to a genetic condition (nf). He took part in a double blind study of NAC over the summer at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital. We don't know if he got the drug or the placebo and we don't know the dosage. But he seemed to improve noticeably when he was doing the study and I am considering getting more NAC for him. Can anyone tell me what a good dosage would be? And what is a good source to buy from?
Also I just saw a comment on FR that NAC was good to tinnitus. My tinnitus which was already bad has worsened since I got covid last December, so I want to try it as well. Any knowledgeable advise would be appreciated.
Can you not ask the dosages that we’re given to those who received the NAC?
That would be good to know.
NAC is also reported to be helpful in recovering from several respiratory illnesses, including China virus.
Dosages for that vary, depending on whose protocol you read or follow.
NAC has been pulled from Amazon and a few other online supplement vendors.
I think you can gugle it to find who still sells it.
NOW, Jarrow and Doctor’s Best seem to be popular brands, from what I’ve read, here.
I hope you have vi to yes success with your son’s treatment.
Keep us posted, please.
I got NAC at Wal*Mart as a prophylactic for COVID. $20 for 250 pills, 600mg each. Take it once a day. Haven’t noticed any changes.
Talk to the study people. Its the ethical thing to do. They spent a lot of money trying to get the double blind results. They should be able to help get you medicine that is part of a trial.
You can buy NAC 1000mg on Amazon <20 for 120 tabs. Just use the same dose he was on before.. I am not a doctor, but 500 or 1000mg per day might be ok.
It is good for all kinds of things, so I’m not surprised it helps tinnitus.
I used to buy it from Amazon. Unfortunately, they no longer sell it. The FDA is attacking these supplements.

Go to Vitacost.com. I buy NOW NAC. 1000mg. Once day. Helps w immunity asthma any upper respiratory.
What’s his weight and age?
What, exactly, is the genetic condition?
The bottle says 1 -3 times per day, but I have no idea on dosages for the study your son was in.
We were using 600mg tabs as a prophylactic for Covid, but one wants to take at least twice as much vitamin C to go along with it...so I’m told.
FWIW, pedoJoe and his little band of merry morons are trying hard to get it pulled off the OTC market and made “prescription only” after 60 years of being on the OTC market. I must work too well treating their CCP-coordinated covid virus. /s
We usually get ours on line from Swanson’s vitamins.
NAC is available at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/NOW%C2%AE-Acetyl-L-Carnitine-500-200-Caps/dp/B000QSLINE/ref=sr_1_6?crid=3VB484GJIX4ID&dchild=1&keywords=nac+supplement+n-acetyl+cysteine&qid=1630334459&sprefix=nac%2Caps%2C615&sr=8-6
Generally, the suggestion is 800 to 1,200 a day...but spread to at least two or three occasions over the day. I’ve taken them since December...mostly one per day and in the 600 range per capsule.
Placemarker
Should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day taking NAC, to prevent renal crystals.
Not the same supplement
That product is Acetyl-L Carnitine, not the N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine you want. Common mistake.
That is NOT N-Acetyl-Cysteine. L-Carnitine is NOT Cysteine the amino acid.
Your keyword Sort on Amazon. is a re-sort done by Amazon marketing. Not too clever a sort
N-Acetyl Cysteine.
To the OP... NAC can be had as a script and tablet. It is an amino acid technically, altered by the position of the Nitrogen on the central portion of the molecule. Hence the N-Acetyl (it has N on the Acetyl group of the Cysteine molecule. Cysteine is an amino acid— which is available as a supplement on its own as a L-Cysteine— the LEFT stereoisomer of Cysteine).
Put your hands up and look at the left and the right as they face you-—one way to explain what a “stereo isomer” is. They are different but have similar mirror image structures which would be different if floating around in solution... etc.
“Caution
Those who supplement with NAC should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily in order to prevent cysteine renal stones. Cysteine renal stones are rare but do occur.”
You appear to have read this so what more info do you need ?
I purchased from Swanson. Price and delivery were good.
Your post is why I love the internet.
I got ear ringing after a vaccine and no one knows what to do with it other than shrug their shoulders.
poster PA Engineer is some kind of medical person. He is a big believer in NAC
I am going to give it a try to see if it will help
