Should’a looked left,
Should’a looked right,
Didn’t see the station wagon car,
Started across,
And there ya are.

Yesterday, I listened to this on Spotify, followed by “Uneasy Rider.”
Weird that Loudon’s son turned out to be caber-gay. Another interesting fact about both Loudon is that he is a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant.

Not as dramatic as a dead armadilo on the road, dead on it’s back, with Lone Star long neck laid in it’s legs.

I remember years after the hit, he was performing at a small venue in Connecticut, and they had to list him in the newspaper ad as “Loudon ‘Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road’ Wainwright III”.
The ‘70s was filled with really lame novelty records (The Dickie Goodman ones aged especially badly), but this one was better than average. Kinda has a Jim “Wildwood Weed” Stafford vibe.
My favorite of the era was Larry Groce’s “Junk Food Junkie”, which has aged VERY well.

My brother and I were driving home from college over 30 years ago in Texas and while radio was playing this song and we definitely passed a dead skunk in the road at the same time. We laughed our asses off. Remember this song with fond memories to this day.

i think a dead skunk must have just walked past our house- We have an ‘all house fan’ which draws air from outside, through house, up into attic- and really cools house off fast- only problem is, when a skunk is nearby- wow!

Last time I was in Vegas on Fremont Street it smelled like a herd of skunks got hit by a semi. But I don’t think there were any skunks. ;-)

I saw this guy back when I was in high school in 78 at a benefit with a lot of comedians, hosted by Steve Martin.
He pretty much got booed off the stage.
When he said this is my last song everyone cheered.
So he said he’s going to do two more songs.

I remember listening to that as a kid on my dads AM radio in the car. Now I have it on CD. I was trying to go to bed early but I just spent an hour listening to oldies on YouTube.
